Am I tanking wrong? Brawler

Hello, today I had my first truly bad experience in Tera. I come from playing the tank role in many mmorpg's such as tanking in WoW for the same guild for nearly 10 years of playing. Tanking is my favorite thing and it is very fun to play tank in Tera as well, I thought I did well tanking for my friends when we ran dungeons. Until about midway through a dungeon today. A sorcerer complained the entire dungeon about me not tanking at all, I was using Provoke off cooldown and saving it for adds when they came up, I thought I was doing a good job with tanking too and having fun while doing it. After telling him that he just laughed and said "Provoke is not how you tank dumb***" after going through my abilities once more I found almost nothing that gave extra aggro except a 5 minute cooldown ability almost identical to provoke.

Just a thought, but am I actually tanking wrong or was he just being rude? If I was tanking wrong please feel free to explain formally a little bit on what exactly I should do. Any help is very much appreciated

  • Tanks have aggro modifiers on their abilities, you shouldn't need to use Provoke off CD. Instead you should be looking to do the most damage you can while using the frontal block on your abilities to soak up damage. I'm not the person to give you an indepth brawler explanation as I don't tank much and when I do it's only mid tier dungeons, but tanking is about DPSing as well.

If you're level 28? or above, the main job of Brawler tanking is keeping up your Growing Fury skill on bosses by doing damage and keeping up Rage as high as possible. When GF is down, you should still just be doing damage. You only need to use Provoke at the start of the fight or if you die and/or lose aggro. Brawlers should be focusing on doing damage. That's how they get aggro.

Provoke is good to use from the start or if party members die a lot due to aggro resets at times. But if you only rely on shouts to keep aggro throughout the fight without doing any dps, it won't work and your team will struggle with aggro switching between the highest dps members in party. The 5 min cooldown is the Infuriate skill. It is good if you need to enrage the boss from start or whenever bosses are not enraged during mid fight. Managing your infuriate is key during fights as most bosses in the newer dungeons don't enrage right away but in DF I believe they do automatically. A way to know is to keep an eye on bosses HP bar if it's flashing red or not.

Usually your damage skills like grounder pounder, roundhouse, jackhammer, haymaker and other attacking skills generate aggro. Your weapon should have some aggro rolls already, so the higher damage you can output, the more aggro generation you will get along with the modifiers. As a tank especially on brawler, you want to have a mindset to do damage as well and not just using shouts. Brawler class relies on pure dps to keep aggro and its main output of dps is from growing fury. Its management of it though can be tricky to handle.

When dps members are constantly doing millions in damage per second, the aggro is always decaying from the tank. The tanks job is to keep doing as much dps as possible to keep aggro from decaying from his/her side. In our current state since aggro was revamped last year sometime around december, tanks are expected be doing good dps from the front. Nowadays they're judged on that along with how they position and all that other good stuff.

When you're used to running with same people over and over, it may not be as noticeable but after running with other people, it might be . There is more potential that other people can be aggressive or just more skilled in their class. Not saying that your friends are bad but that's just how it is in tera from my tanking experience. I been there before long ago on my lancer and learned to make adjustments. It just takes time.

Other than provoke, what other skills do you use? Tanks in Tera should be active and aggressive, as their attacks also draw aggro. I have not tanked anything higher than DFNM, but that's what I usually do. Block the high damage stuff but don't just spam block skills. I personally tank in a similar way to how I do dps on those tank classes. Maximizing damage will also maximize aggro.
  • thank you all for answering. I didn't have the slightest idea on how to tank, or have any clue that dps generated more aggro. Coming from playing WoW i thought it was mostly passive generation where your auto attacks are enough to keep aggro.

As a brawler, your aggro comes from your dps, if you look at your weapon, you got some aggro generation lines already included, thats all you need to keep aggro. From there, you have to use your skills like Roundhouse kick, Jackhammer, Haymaker, Piledriver and Ground Pounder (they are the most important skills that you'll spam during the fight) Then you're going to need to learn to hold "Growing Fury" the longer you keep it up, the better you'll tank and dps. Keep in mind Brawl is only usefull when dpsing, otherwise take a lancer if you want a true "tank feeling" cuz brawl is all about dps.

for more basic and in-depth advices you should take a look at this guide : http://www.essentialmana.com/brawler-pve/

Are you pre-level 65 and there was a mystic summoning a thrall of protection? RIP. this stupid thrall generates insane amount of aggro that it can draw the orange ring by just 1 hit and no tank is able to grab that orange ring back until this thrall dies.

Are you already level 65? Keep in mind that brawler is not only a tank but also a frontal DPS. You need to use correct damage crystals and play aggressively. Use provoke to setup initial aggro only.

near the end of your post you mentioned having a second shout to generate aggro. if i'm not mistaken this is infuriate, a skill that enrages a monster when used

while it does generate aggro, it also increases the dps of your dps classes (provided they have the proper rolls/crystals), so it does very little for taking aggro back from another party member, especially if one of them just had it. as you start playing brawler or lancer/warrior tank more, you'll benefit greatly from learning how long each boss enrages for, and utilizing your enrage skill to help increase your parties' dps.

You should only use provoke if someone died, as someone dying resets aggro and use it only if you had lost it, or to temporarily take aggro of mobs. Otherwise, as Brawler the only way to maintain aggro is by dealing damage. Brawler is different than Lancer and standard tanks because they don't get high aggro modification, and if a dps is dealing much more damage they won't hold aggro. If you want to keep playing Brawler then you have to try to keep Growing Fury up as often as you can, and play the class as if you're a dps who just has to block/dodge more attacks.
  • Yes, he was being rude.
  • Depends on the dungeon in question.

If you're 65 your weapon crystals should be focused, wrathful, pounding x2 or threatening and pounding depends.

Keep in mind there will be some bosses you have to move around to help maintain dps and keep the healers from getting stressed.

Also keep in mind Teras community is known for it's trolls and grievers'. Just keep trying.

If you're on TR look me up I'll be glad to help you out.
  • Its Tera
    Its pugs
    Of course he was rude

As Taylor Swift would say, "Shake it Off" kek.

Believe me at 65 it doesn't get any better, but occasionally you'll run into a group with 1 or 2 skilled who don't mind teaching (thank you). Unfortunately, from what I've encountered many are noobs who use IM indicated by that little Heart symbol or free Neophytes iunno free revives.

They changed the aggro formula so yes unlike how it used to be, tanking pretty much is all about DPS now and +12 slaughter + buffs is good enough to keep aggro. As for crystals glyphs don't know about Brawlers, but for lancers you want crit crit crit, half ur aggro skills are useless don't glyph, and no aggro crystals (well there is some debate about that). If you lose it constantly more than likely it was your fault from not attacking as the game to some degree punishes the tank for turtling. Whenever you lose aggro due to a DPS huge crit, a decent tank should be able to get it back right away.

Regardless, b/c of the change, expect more rage pissy comments towards tank. You know how it is wipe always tanks fault. At same time, DPS who clearly out gear the tank, don't use Eclipse potions, continues to attack when they steal aggro, run across the map with aggro, place pancakes near tank instead of the edges, ignore gimmicks expect tank n spank......its a no brainer why this VM6/7 +15 DPS in using IM for a HM dungeon and not doing it with guild. Lots of things can go wrong as a tank that are completely out your control.

    Examples:

In DFHM you can place all the pancakes on edges party wipes Vera 20% health remaining. No room for pancakes Tank still gets blamed. Someone links the DPS kid you not one DPS did 56% total damage to Vera. Still tank will be blamed :)

In MM once took 3 mins for the healer to heal me, wouldn't cleanse DPS or me (don't think he knew), and wouldn't revive dead players (no cleanse) in a timely matter like not kidding.

In other cases, pug healers would rather revive the dead DPS and 4 man the rest of the fight instead of reviving the dead tank....logic. That was in KDHM and you can bet he did revive me for last boss- we cleared that fight was smooth. I have personally seen healers get real pissy and refuse to heal a DPS over BS troll comments or because he or she thinks player is not playing class right.

Solution is to just put your tank in a static ASAP and develop a synergy with your new core.
If you PUG, unless criticism is constructive ignore move along.

I personally don't use challenge shout much even on lancer(lancer does have other shouts you should use to buff the party). Usually as a room entry thing or when dealing with a bunch of trash mobs. On both lancer and brawler, so long as you are attacking with your rotations and mitigating/evading the big damage/one-shot mechanics, you shouldn't lose aggro, unless the gear disparity between tank and a geared dps is too big (as in DN vs perfect rolled +15 ninja skilled player). Though those pairings shouldn't be common.
