Question on name conflict resolution after server merger

So, I read Treeshark's post on how this is handled. The characted that has been played the most gets the name unless the other contenders haven't been on in a year or more. Simple, however the process can't stop there. After that we are told we must choose a new name. What isn't said is if the naming conflict resolution begins again.

Suppose I have a character named Simon. Now suppose too that there is, against all odds since this is a male name, another Simon on another server being merged. I think "how odd" and decide to rename my character to Psimon, for that surely hasn't been take. Well guess what, it is a Psimon last played 2 years ago. Am I, in this case, SOL, or will my more recent Psimon get the name?

I don't think all the details have been announced yet, but from what I understand, it is happening in different phases:

Step 1: Name Wipe: all names used by characters who haven't logged in in <x> time will be reset (making the names available again)

Step 2: Merger & Name Conflict Resolution: The character with the most play time will keep the name, and the others will be reset.

Step 3: Name Selection: Characters whose names were reset pick a new name on the new server, based on what is still available.

So, in your specific example, the Psimon who hasn't logged in for two years will lose the name in Step 1, so will be available in Step 3.

We will need to wait for more details about the specific implementation to understand if Step 1 & 2 happen at the same time or as two different events, and this would determine the most likely way to get the name you want.

  • Oh okay. I may have misread the post then. I didn't gather from it that there would be a name wipe, but rather, characters played less recently than a year would simply have a lower priority. That's good to know at least since it reduces the pool of names I would have to contend with in the first place. Still If someone make a Psimon as minimally played name-holder I would like it if my raid-ready character-formally-known-as-Simon would have priority. That is to say I can choose to rename my character to a name that is already on the server, but has fewer hours played.

no you wont be able, the new name must be one that dont exist in the server.

TBH,you should wait until the merge FAQ is released.
