Intel i5-6600k or i7-6700?

I'm not sure which one to get for gaming, but I wanna make sure it'll be okay for Tera. I know I won't get a constant 60fps, but I wanna make sure I don't spend anymore money than I need to get for a cpu. I'm going to play most of my games on Ultra or Max Settings.

I plan on getting these along with it.
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB
CPU: Intel i7-6700 or i5-6600k(I'm not gonna overclock any of them)
RAM: 8GB, but I'll upgrade to 16GB.
HDD: 512GB SanDisk X400 SSD

  • Those will be plenty for Tera... if it was optimized properly. There are a few tweaks you can do to make things run a little smoother however, shown in this guide http://teratoday.com/content/tera-guide/tera-general-guide/tera-optimization-guide-bernkastel

For other games, what resolution you'll be playing at? A GTX 1060 will be plenty for 1080p gaming, but may fall short if you go higher resolution and/or framerates.
In terms of CPU, you can't even overclock non-K variants, just saying :P I'd go with the i7 myself thanks to Multithreading, which i5s don't have.
Overall seems a very decent rig!

I'm still wondering how to configure the S1engine.INI file to make the game look like itself with higher framerates. So far I've been looking at what Navjak's been doing, but I'll try to figure something out.

For the most part I'll only do 1080p gaming, 4k does seem nice, but I think I've been drawn too much into graphical details already. I gotta know when enough is enough.

An i7 can be a good choice, but only if you already have a top GPU.
Per example, You are between an i5 or i7, but already chose a GTX 1060. However, an i5 with GTX 1070 costs just a bit more than an i7 with GTX 1060 and has much better performance in games in general.
For TERA particulary, an I5 second generation or above and a low end GPU like GTX 750 ti or HD 6850 will run well.
  • Good luck. I have an i5-6600k and still get 20 FPS even after doing all the tweaks from the guide linked to in an above comment.

Hopefully nVidia learned from the 960 fiasco that landed them into a lawsuit and the 1070 performs as advertised. So yeah. While 1060 sounds promising, it will need some overclocking (and dedicated cooling) for it to really shine. That, or an SLI setup that Tera won't use anyway. The 1070 and 1080 are cards that can go with only minimal (say, factory) overclocking or no OC at all. They also work fine with their default coolers because their capabilities make them work games with less load. Sure, you will still want to manage cooling profiles yourself, but other than that, they are a great install and forget buy.

As for CPU. I've been very out of the loop on them, but I do still know that whatever CPU gives you the best bang per single core for your buck, that's the one Tera will like most.
  • GPU hardly does anything at all to Tera. There was an old post that tested Tera with a GTX 660 vs a GTX 680 , the difference was about 5-10fps at most . Tera is mostly CPU-bound due to the Engine so if you want to get the most out of Tera , get a overclockable Intel i5 (i7 not necessary at all) and overclock it , the difference can be extremely huge . My friend OCed their FX-6300 from 3.5Ghz to 4.0Ghz and went from 20fps to 60FPS constantly in Tera. And yeah its reccomended to use tweaks so you gain more FPS in Tera , even if youre rocking a i7 extreme , its a really unoptimized game.

6600k and 6700 have similar base and max frequency. So, unless you plan on doing something that utilizes hyper threading and benefits from the 2M extra cache then the 6600k is going to be better performance:money wise. The 6600k currently in the US is ~220$ while the 6700 is ~ 302$. If you can afford to spend an extra 80$ then do so, otherwise just go with the 6600k. Although, you should at least do a light overclock with the 6600k to at least 4.1 as a recommendation.
  • There is no reason not to overclock an Intel CPU. It's so dumbed down nowdays that it's really just one click away and you get at least 20% more performance out of it without risking anything or needing expensive cooler.

Mine is an i5 [email protected] running for 3 years w/o a problem. And the difference is night and day. TERA really love raw clockspeed and single core performance of Intel.

Because tera is not optimised, you need the best cpu you can get. Do yourself a favour, get the K-series and ask some one to OC it for you.

Let me add my two cents. When you're building a new pc think about what you're going to have to upgrade down the road. If you buy a good I7 right now( i'd get the 6700k), 8-16 GB of RAM and a good SSD hard drive then all you really need to think about is the video card. The video card is the part that's going to be outdated 2 years from now and by outdated I mean won't run the newest games on the market at 1080p with the graphics completely cranked and maintain 60fps at all times. If that bothers you 2 years from now you simply buy a new one slap it in and you're good to go. RAM and Hard drive... same deal, slap more in.
If you skimp on the processor however then an upgrade means a new motherboard and a new processor. A new motherboard most likely will mean a new kind of RAM as well. I just went through this issue myself and I'll never do it again.
    Anyway GL with the pc.
  • i have a i7 6700k @4.5ghz 16gb ram Asus Strix 980ti OC 6gb i run Tera in 4k 3840x2160 and get amazing fps 60+ minimum 45-50 in dungeons towns. my ping is also 40-50ms id imagine that helps too on highwatch server
