I want to be a better tank

I've got a 65 Brawler, but I suck as a tank, I've watched the few vids out there on Youtube, but to me it seems like the later boss battles rely way to heavily on tanks. I can sit there keeping my shield up, and still get wrecked, half the time I keep my shield up consistently, but I can't always, and it alot of times my right click guards lags or doesn't work. So I dodge and move around when my health gets low, and everyone complains because I'm dodging, and I'm not controlling the boss. Ok I get it, a tank is supposed to tank, but when did a tank turn into "control the whole fight", every MMO the tank just does that, tank, but here the tank has to control which direction the boss is facing, do this do that, basically make everyone's life easier while Brawlers or any tank has the hardest job. And most have the audacity to sit there and complain, get good..learn how to tank..yet they aren't tanking..

So..I'm here because there is very little reading material to learn how to tank as a Brawler, it should be simple, but it's not, there are so many factors that make it very hard..I'm pressured to stay in the fray and "tank", though after my roundhouse kick doesn't reset after jackhammer, then I try to counter, half the time nothing happens when I counter, it's delayed, most times I'm lagged as hell, so the boss is just killing me. I'm more than willing to believe there are things I'm doing wrong, but should entire boss fight rely on whether or not you have an elite Tank/Brawler? By all means point me in the right direction of some vids, or please give me some advice, because I really want to contribute, but I would think the fact that I'm out DPSing everyone on the team is contribution enough, now I have to frickin carry everyone too?

Yes this was a rant/cray for help lol, any advice and or constructive criticism is welcome..or just talk crap, this is the internet so I'm sure you will anyway

To see the words Brawler and not simple in the same message... is this the twilight zone? You complain that people demand that you control the boss even though that's exactly what the job of a tank in Tera is, random aggro and mechanics aside. If you're out dpsing your entire team as you say you shouldn't have any problems considering you'd have aggro all the time, so I'm leaning towards the notion that that's not true and you're just upset that you don't know how to do your job, understandable. Blaming it on lag and that tanks have the hardest job just threw any sympathy I had for you out the window though-- here's a thought if you're lagging all the time try rerolling as a dps, that way you can continue to contribute very little while you complain about everyone else!

On the flipside that you genuinely want to learn I recommend pulling your head out of your backside first 'cause that ego won't get you far. You said you watched youtube vids, which is good, but instead of learning anything to actually make you better you just complain that endgame dungeons rely too much on tanks. Either man up to the task, go back and watch those videos willing to actually learn how to play your class, or like I said just reroll as a dps.

Ok. tanking in this game requires a few things in this game. Of course you will need to setup your character with gear, glyphs and good accessories. But from what I read on your post, your main problem is your own player skill. So, first. No. A tank shouldn't move unless it is to make the fight easier for the DPS, and that usually happens at the start of the fight and sometimes when boss decides to be a troll or when aggro resets because someone died. The tank has enough tools to attack while using minimal blocking. So holding block all the night is also doing it wrong. You need to attack constantly. In the case of brawler, many attacks (not just the counter) can also block anything that is not an unblockable one shot. Some of these attacks gain block status after other attacks, so it's important to learn rotations and timing.

Here's a good guide that will teach you some basics and a bunch of advanced things to do with your brawler. NOW, most of what you will learn, you get it from experience. Start with easy dungeons like Sabex, Catacombs or Channelworks(this last one is best used to plain practice rotations because it's a huge dps check only)
  • firstly, Jackhammer does not reset RHK. Piledriver does

different players make different mistakes and have different areas to improve on. If you'd like pointers I'd have to see your glyph page + a sample video of you playing to tell you exactly how you can get better

I wanna be a better tank, like no one ever was
To kill bosses is my real test, to gather mobs is my cause.
I will travel across the land, searching far and wide,
All of my party will understand, the tank is here to fight...

(Okay enough of cringe worthy pokemon stuff)

I will say that tanking is probably the easiest job out of the trinity in Tera. Positioning as a tank is infinitely easier, because after you set the boss down you don't really need to move until the boss hits thresholds. And don't expect yourself to do the most amount of damage after huge nerfs to brawler's dps that was planned to be coming up.

In reality, every boss is tankable even with 300ms ping. You won't be able to block every single attack at that ping, but at least you will get the majority out of the way. If you are being whitted down too much, chances are you are not understanding the boss's rotations and fitting proper skills that can be cancelled with counter that people would know when attacks are coming soon.

Most Brawlers at high ping only lose out if they also have low fps. There is really no reading material for tanking needed because it is really a "in your face" class. The only thing you can min-max is rotations and even that emphasizes on damage rather than actual tanking. And most of tanking derives from common sense.

Also @Nopi the glyphs that give block effect no longer exists so Brawlers have to rely more on counter if GF isn't up.

Just logged in and checked my brawler to see, and at least roundhouse kick still has it. A favorite of mine is roundhouse>haymaker. If they ever kill that, they kill one of the few combinations I really like from this class. >.>

As for playing brawler right, maintaining growing fury while also doing everything pertaining to tanking is what makes brawler more interesting and a bit more challenging to play. Sure, those already able may see it as second nature, but it's one of the player skills that players have to learn to get the class to a higher level.

  • Some1 in ur guild should be a dank brawler tank

Ask him for pointers as u can tell from reading above posts many do the know what the [filtered] to say and generic vague answers doesn't answer squat.
    You need details bruh

First rule of Tank Club, Is we do not talk about Tank Club.
Second rule of Tank Club, Is we must know our Abilities.
Third Rule of Tank Club, Is we must know our Enemy.

    Always remember to Provoke
(Draw the aggro of all enemies within 10m (even while you're moving).

    Always remember to Counterpunch
(After a successful block, throw a counterpunch that knocks the enemy up into the air. Can trigger Perfect Defense.)

    And don't forget to Infuriate!
(Challenge enemies in a wide area, maximizing your aggro)

    Besides that...

Gear is a + But depending on what you do, It's not necessarily even needed.
I can tank your Average DFNM with +15 players and hold aggro just fine in +12 Dreadnaught.

Just gotta learn the DPS rotation, make sure to block when you need to & Provoke em!

But if PING | MS | LAG is a issue for you, Tanking might not be the best of ideas. Neither would healing :(

If you are in TR I can help you \o\
  • Thanks for all the replies, even the not so helpful ones (expected a few douchey comments anyway).

@ Starbuzz, I can't recall what server I'm on atm, will get back to you! thanks for the offer!

I think part of my problem is I tend to get tunnel vision and am not focused on the bosses animatons, so I tend to get wrecked by their main attack. But i know there have been times when I am blocking, and am still taking large amounts of damage. I can post a pick of my load out so whoever wants to can pick it apart, can. I am by no means an expert, I am a pretty casual player by Tera standards. I am working on a Gunner, so if I keep having issues with my Brawler and can't do any higher level Boss runs without pissing everyone in my part off, then I will just switch to that. I am going to read through all the replies again, and try to apply what you've suggested.

All in all, thanks for everyone's feedback

Also, I'm not sure why I would be lagging, I've got a 200mbps Cable internet connection, with around 25mbps upload, an Sapphire VaporX 8gb 290x card, 4790k overclocked to 4.5ghz, 32gb of 2400mhz RAM, Windows 10 on an SSD, and an ASROCK z97 e6 motherboard, everything watercooled. I run the game between 40 and 80 FPS, so really not sure why in these boss fights I am just bottoming out sometimes, it's weird...
  • with the skills in the hotkey positions that you get for levelling normally, you go 5->1->2->3->1->4->repeat and occasionally throw in an infuriate.Press block every so often and space so you can get that counterpunch in.. don't dodge cus you're not a paper dps.
for rolls: roll everything for growing fury and either crit factor or attack speeds (some people like the attack speeds)
for glyphs: get all the rage builders and resets to skills (especially the ones in the positions above)
I'm assuming you're not doing the "real" dungeons (which are a joke anyway, nothing in this game is hard) so you should be fine doing this, only the "real" dungeons require any type of watching for the attacks and timing for things. Tanking is not hard, especially on brawlee.

Dude, brawler should never use provoke off cd.
Provoke is used to drain aggro fast, in case you have lost it (for example because somebody in the team died)
If you use provoke off cd, you are doing it very wrong.

Provoke is used to "Gain" Aggro fast. Drain, Wouldn't be the word i would use when tanking.
And why not use it? It's meant to "Gain Aggro" Simply put. Takes a sec to cast and you continue on tanking.
DPS is not the main responsibility of a tank. Keep that in mind.

Because if somebody dies and aggro is reset, and in the same time dps is burning hard, you will not have a skill to "regain" it fast, unless you have GF on. Besides it disrupts basic brawler rotation.
Using provoke off cd when not needed is bad habbit and should be avoided. No tank on higher level uses it for a reason.

Did not know if someone dies, aggro resets. Thought if they died, It reset's "Their" aggro on the target.
But to each their own. I've never had a problem, and it doesn't disrupt my rotation

Dealing damage wasn't one of the tank 'jobs'. Now it is, even Lancers. Their job is to provide support, in case of lancers with their buffs, position the boss, debuff the boss and deal as much damage as possible.

As i said. I have no issues tanking a dungeon and maintaining aggro.
So i must be doing something right

But i already stated you want to learn the damage rotation while your tanking a boss.
    Positioning helps.
Knowing what the boss does so you can block or i-frame helps as well.
Crystals are not needed, but if you must. u can throw 1 threatening in the mix.

As for damage. Sure, your going to do damage, That's a given. But as i said, It's not a tank's only job :p
