Tera vs Black Desert Online
I've heard good things about BDO and it looks really cool. But the whole "sandbox" thing sounds iffy to me. I like being told what to do sometimes, i like the whole idea of DBZ like progression where you constantly train to get stronger and take on stronger enemies. Is BDO like that? Does it have the bustling and fun community like Tera has with towns with tons of people running around doing stuff? I definitely don't want to feel lonely playing an MMORPG, and I definitely like to work together with people to finish quests and push through to the next task.
If everyone is doing their own thing it's not going to be as fun.

Tera has always had this feature and it didn't cause Tera to die out. What really makes BDO P2W is the fact that you can buy an item akin to a goddess blessing that you can use to keep your damage up on World Bosses so you get the most loot. Players that don't have this luxury will not be able to get the BiS gear in the game. Also the infinite trash mob grind is boring AF and the layers and layers of micro transactions in the game for overpriced "convenience" items abusively manipulate impulsive players into spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars very quickly.

However, just browsing the forums will show you how much everyone seems to hate the game, for some reason...mostly P2W, you got to pay for literally everything. At least in tera you have the option to grind and actually earn your gold...
I was super hyped for BDO, but as others have mentioned, it is dying fast with next to nobody happily enjoying the game anymore. I did buy the game but haven't played it yet, so I can't say for sure....but just check out the official forums. See all the complaints.
If you don't yet own the game, I will give you a free code (that'll let you play for 1 week for free). None of my friends are interested in it, but I already own it, so...
Nobody talks about BNS anymore, too. Like sure Tera isn't the greatest, but it's certainly in a better spot than either of those games IMO.
Alright mate, here's what happened with BDO.
It started as a BUY TO PLAY game, meaning you had to drop anywhere from 30 to 100 bucks just to START PLAYING at all. The Korean version is free to play, but it's full of paytowin garbage. So a lot of people in the NA/EU version thought "hey, sure, ours is buy to play, but that means no pay to win nonsense!" and the developers assured players that there wouldn't be any pay2win.
Fast forward a DAY into the launch, and what happens? They release costumes with stats. Already people like me are raising eyebrows. A fish costume that gives its wearer swimming abilities able to rival boats that "free" (and there is no free player! everyone paid to get in!!) players spend days building. A costume that makes one's name and body invisible during pvp. Pets that loot so you can kill faster and gain more xp faster. Die hard fans at this point were like "it's just pay for convenience," but me personally, I quit then and there.
Fast foward to the present day and HERE WE ARE, they're introducing a subscription service for a BUY TO PLAY game. So you buy the [filtered] game. And then if you want to keep up with everyone around you, you drop more money into it every month. AND now you can sell cash shop items on the broker like tera, something the head dev explicitly said would NEVER be a thing, effectively allowing anyone to turn real money into in game gold.
Players are so pissed about this that they're protesting IN THE GAME. Like, they log in and just stand in town waving flags and protesting. Nobody's actually playing the game right now; they're just in the BDO version of Velika, protesting about how the game they already purchased is now taking on a free2play model. It's despicable. At least when tera does this kind of thing, you can say "well it's a free to play game, they gotta make money somehow" but BDO WAS AND STILL IS buy to play; they made anywhere from 30-100 dollars off of EVERY SINGLE PLAYER already but they just want more, more, more. It's so pathetic. Don't bother switching. Oh, and class balance is horrible over there as well. All the game has going for it are its looks. Combat feels alright, but tera feels better. And at least you don't spam potions in tera.
BnS is still fun P2W elements and a lot of Korean grind, although the grind is getting a rework in the form of decreased weapon upgrades very soon. It's the best looking MMO I've played better than BDO even.
TERA is still fun, completely free, which is rare. Still get VERY boring quick now as there just is not enough content.
The fights that the pro and anti p2w people have there are epic, add to it a good dose of shills, trying to get the situation under control and you got some epic popcorn moments.
In the end it boils down to this: No matter how good an mmo is, if the publisher sucks, the mmo will too.
Its exactly the reason why i didnt bothered with BDO, i realized the whole B2P is just smoke and mirrors.
The game was set up as F2P from the beginning, they just used B2P as an excuse for more milking.
You can kick and scream about not caring to be milked because you have tons of money (like plenty of fanboys on their forums do), but it matters not, a shady publisher is shady and will drag a good game down.
I like your comment. It pretty much says, judge the game for your own experience. Not for what others say about it. So thanks for trying to keep people's feet on solid ground.
As for the game, I have no opinion because I haven't played, nor even seen it.
You judge its p2w and has been from the getgo.
Pets are not even an option, but mandatory to progress forward and how much do pets still cost in that game?
$30 per level?
Maybe its changed, but unless you have a wallet that stretches all the way to Timbuktu, like ArcheAge you need money to play that game and garner some lvl of enjoyment. Naysayers are typical those who spent a great chunk of money of game and are supporters aka defending their insane purchases from what is obv a cash grab. It was downright stupid to have to pay iunno 50-60 dollars for game. Then another 50 dollars for pets and who knows what other transactions. The diff. between p2w vs f2p one of many anyway...is if you have to pay cash in order to move forward and in BDO no disputing it you do.
Moreover I wouldn't call a game active that can't even make top 50 rank on KR MMO most played list.
Hope enmasse will get the franchises.
The combat isn't better than Tera's, but good enough. Melee is more fun because it feels more action oriented, but range classes are OP atm.
One of the things you will most likely be doing a lot of is killing many many mobs. Kill quests start out small, and gradually increase. At level 55+ normal one time kill quests have about 100+. Guild quests vary depending on size, 100 for small to over 5000 for large. They are meant to be done in groups, as a guild. It reminds me of dynasty warriors, where you slaughter many mobs and generals. It's a similar feeling for me.
If you like to do quests, there are literally thousands of them. There are even thousands of trade quests, where you buy items and cart them to somewhere else, and then sell them for a profit. You can specify which quest types to show/hide, like combat only or fishing only.
Like in Tera, you can skip quests and just grind to get levels.
BDO really isn't too much of a sandbox game, but has elements. There is a story quest arc with cinematic cutscenes, and many side quests with their own stories. You can follow the quest line to end game or skip it entirely, just like tera.
You can hunt (with a special gun weapon), go kill whales in the sea (hunting), fishing, farming, trading goods, gather plants/rocks/trees/blood/hide/animal meat/etc, cooking food buffs, alchemy for elixirs or other useful items, investment banking, house decorating, tame and breed horses, or manage a worker empire that can craft and gather almost anything. I think that's most of the things you can do.
You can ignore all of the sandbox elements if you just wanted to kill things or people.
It is cheaper to buy a +15 gear or weapon than to upgrade it yourself because the market prices are semi-fix, but move slowly to fit the economy trends. +20 is max, but super hard to get because of rng enchanting, just like tera's.
The game looks so much better than tera, and it runs better to boot. It has a day and night cycle. Without a lamp, caves and night time can get very dark.
BDO also has environmental effects. You can die in the desert from heat stroke in the day, and from hypothermia at night. You will also need a compass or the map will go away. Tents are needed for the sand storms, but they are not very frequent. Snow and snowy areas are going to be added later.
People are crying about P2W, but it's almost the same as Tera. The subscription has similar benefits, like no tax from brokering items. You can sell cash shop items on the broker. They have cosmetic items that give tiny bonuses, like Tera's innerwear, BDO has in game versions as well. It's just the type of community that game has that's seems distraught over very similar conditions as Tera and other MMOs.
Pets mainly help pick up items that drop, and give small bonuses. Hawk, for instance, can point out nearby elite mobs. Item pick up is on a cooldown, and varies between pet type and pet level. You level pets by feeding them. The game devs gave out a couple of pets during events. I have a penguin and a hawk pet, for free.
The game has events going on all the time, giving good items, unlike tera's temporary items.
You can get through most of the game playing solo, but if you're a social person, you will want to join a guild. Same with as tera.
A huge ocean with sea monsters with underwater content is coming up as a large update. Open world naval battle will be possible. Also a new, asian themed continent on the other side of the ocean will open up. It's real content, unlike tera's recycled stuff.
You can pick one gear set at low level and keep it forever, just upgrading it. You can also share gear between your alts. All classes can wear all the armor in game, no restriction. Some classes share weapon types and can be shared between toons.
Knowledge, a resource for getting energy, is shared as well. Energy is used for crafting, gathering, fishing, and many other things. Another resource is contribution points, or CP for short, is gotten through quests (dailies and all other kind of quests give CP). Contribution points are used for investing in landmark nodes, borrowing items from npcs, buying houses or workshops, and getting more city inventory space,
There is tons to the game. And it's very different from many other MMOs. Not everyone is going to like the changes in the genre. I think BDO is a step forward for the MMORPG genre.
Overal both are great mmo's but I won't play both really (tera not much more) since I play to move to Revelation Online, BDO remains an amazing mmo however.
