Starting new player in TERA, class? Ninja?

Hello everyone,

I was looking for a nice f2p mmorpg and found TERA. I really love the combat style here being accustomed to click a target and that´s it. My problem is that I really don´t know what class to play. I am looking for a good class in PVE as in PVP but the most important thing is for it to be fun as I don´t like having many characters. I was thinking on the ninja, love the mobility but dunno if they are good or not, I am going crazy if ninja would be a fun class or what to make. My second and third options are a reaper and a sorcerer. Tend to play caster but really like the mobility available in this game. Oh and by the way how do I change this forum name?

Sorry for coming with this thread as I believe it is the typical but dunno much about the ninja as it is new.

ps: I already realized I will, most likely, need to be an Elin but well won´t be that much of a problem.

Thank you a lot

Ninja is the most OP and simplest class at the moment, Reaper can be fun and Sorcerer will soon be getting a class revamp. I recommend starting with Ninja.

    Nickname Change

Welcome! It is great that you show interest in TERA. For starters, try all classes and level until about 30, which is super easy. Then you will get a feel of each class and will be able to make your choice. All classes are good in both fields, PvE and PvP, the twist is, the player. You must spend time with your class in order to master it, and draw its max potential. Player skill goes a long way here in TERA. Whaveter you do, if you plan to spend time on 1 class, do not power level. You need to learn all of your skills and what each skill does, that is the first step.

If you tend to play casters in other MMOs, but like mobility, i recommend you to go for Gunner, altho you will once again, as you have already realized it with ninja, be locked into a gender/race locked class. To change your forum nickname, you will need to send a ticket to Support.

In the future you will want to post newcomer discussion in the proper subforum. Just to keep things tidy here.

    Welcome to TERA.
  • Thanks for the answers so far. Really like the help here :)
About the gunner, it is not the type of class I like. I prefer more mobility and less tanky class, dunno if I make myself understand (english is not my main language).
Abou the sorcerer it would nice but as I read it will get a revamp so I don´t think it´s a smart idea to start with one if it is going to change soon.
I was reading about each class and so far what gets the most attention from me is the ninja and reaper, like the mobility and I believe, considering the combat system here, changing from my typical caster to a melee type class would be nice.
Don´t know what you guys here think or what advises do you have for me as new here or reviews on the ninja.

About the forum thing, is there a way for me to move my thread there? Didn´t intend to get it all messy here, sorry.
  • When it comes to mobility, nothing beats the ninja. If you're looking for a fun class to start with I would highly recommend it, as new players (in my experience) really love the class. It's not too complicated but allows for a lot of growth.

I would not recommend sorcerer for new players purely because they are very hard to solo level and at end game they are one of hardest classes to play well. Better to get yourself familiar with the game and how the combat works late game before making a sorcerer. Leveling one is very discouraging.

Other than that, I would recommend trying every class, since you're used to standard MMO combat, certain classes may surprise you. A lot of people who enjoy caster classes in other MMO's end up liking gunners rather than sorcerers but everyone is different.
  • Ninja (melee), Gunner (range) best DPs in game at this point in time, easy to learn and fun to use. So for people new to tera I'd suggest those two classes. Reaper (mid range melee) unlocks after you reach 45 or 50 with another alt so give it a try as well you start at level 50 with that I think.
  • Thanks a lot for all that help. I believe I will go for a ninja then. Not that happy to be a Elin but the gameplay is all. I think I will get on Mount Tyranas as it is PvP and crowded server.
I will follow your advises and go for the ninja first and then maybe I will try other classes, but for what I have seen I think I will like a lot hte ninja.
Any other review or suggestion will be welcome :)

    PvE :
    - Ninja : 10/10. Being the newest class, they together with brawler DPS are by far the strongest dps in PvE . Very easy to play as with all new generation classes.
    - Reaper : 9/10: a tiny bit behind Gunner. So they are both 2nd place. Also easy to play.

    PvP:
    - Ninja : 9/10. Plethora of CC, Mobility, Evasion but squishy. They are broken as heck in PvP. Can lockdown the whole party for 5-6 seconds. Opponents cant even break free without Priest or Lancer's help. Super easy to be useful in PvP.
    - Reaper : 10/10. THE cancer of TERA PvP. So much effectiveness for so little effort. I never take anyone seriously when they play reaper in PvP. Everyone else hates them.
  • just make both
  • Ninja is a great class to start indeed.
  • My first class is Slayer. Tried almost all the class in the end go back to slayer xD

If you actually want to learn how to play the game versus slam the space bar or autoblock I advice against playing any of the new classes until you've gotten one of the old classes to at least level 50. Among the old classes I would suggest either warrior or archer.

edit: Oh, by the way, warrior is pretty much the original ninja. Prior to the ninja it was the fastest, it has a "jump to back" ability, and hopped around. If you use a bunny-eared elin, you could be the Energizer Bunny. It is also far more well-rounded than the ninja.
  • Dont mention a warrior to a noob

the skill cap on warrior is stupid high and heavily reliant on ping

From a pve perspective, as classes that can be created as any race and gender, I can advise Slayer and Archer. At least of the classic classes, I find those the easier to grab and play with and both can currently do great dps. On Slayer, you can use spacebar chains as a crutch at first until you get the class down and can go full manual. Archer is more manual, but their attacks are simple enough to know what they are about. Both classes start rather slow, with the fun skills happening at higher levels (58-65) but in the end both are very rewarding to master.

Again, this is an advice about classes that are not gender or race locked. reaper, Gunner, Brawler and Ninja are all race/gender locked, but because they were meant to draw in casuals, they are much easier to pick up. They do make the core game easier to learn with so you can chose a more challenging class later, though.
  • I'm of the opinion when you start with one of these new classes you indeed learn how to play the game, but you learn to play it wrong. You then have to unlearn it before you play any other class or content for characters level 60 and up.

I do agree with you on the warrior bit. That was a pretty stupid suggestion of mine.
