Will the new UI changes help with the bad optimization?

So i quit Tera a year ago after sticking with it from the BETA because right around the time Ravenous Gorge came out, on the last boss my FPS dropped to single digits even when i turned off the UI and my game was freezing and was overall laggy. I came back and when i played Khavaliers Challenge (or whatever the ship with the big ogre was) It was literally un playable because of how bad the lagg was. Even with everything turned down to low and no UI, i had around 5 FPS. Since UI is running on Flash, i was wondering if the new UI they promised will change all that, and i can finally get decent gameplay without having to turn off the UI on medium settings. I spent $1200 on my PC and it would be a waste if I could not play my favorite MMO that i dedicated so much time to. Im coming back right now to check up on things but I hope changes will come. Tired of having 80 FPS in open world, but less than 30 in dungeons which=lagg and freezes for me.

When i go to Windows Defender, its greyed out, i cant do anything. I will try to turn off AVG, then add it to exception, but it dosent make sense, since im not using Window Defender anyways. And I put Tera folder in AVG excpetion

On Windows Defender, at least happened for Windows 10, you can go to a section for exclusions. There's a folders section there and it should allow you to toss the tera folder there. I assume you need to be an administrator in order to do it as I doubt a non admin user account would be able to decide what to exclude.

As for the UI, from what I understand it's not Flash, but Scaleform. Still it's one of the main causes why people experience lag, with some tests putting the game with UI at 80 FPS and without it going way over 160 FPS, based on some tests some people made a few months ago. So in all, you will need to search for optimization guides out there to try and make your game run a bit faster, since the in game video options are not enough to do it.

It's programmed in Scaleform but it's still dependent on Flash to render the UI so it still suffers from the limitations and inefficiency of Flash.

it's programmed in an outdated scaleform which was more cpu focused to render the UI in flash causing a lot of issues since the game can utilize a few cores, with the UI hogging up a good space of one of those cores (or supposedly how it is from when i was trying to figure out how it all worked a year+ ago).
  • Does the UI get it's own thread, or does it have to share one with the engine?

    supposedly it shares one.
  • Yeah. I figured. Otherwise it wouldn't be an issue huh. It's just that the previous post seemed to suggest that it ran on a separate thread.

As far as I know, the UI changes is mostly in appearance and not performance. Some people edit their UI to get rid of things or hide things that aren't useful and what they're doing is giving you some of that options without modifying your game.
  • I am an administrator. The problem is, is that because i have AVG on, Windows Defender is automatically turned off so as to not cause conflict between the 2. It wont matter if i put in in exception folder, wont improve gameplay. I recently logged back on to Tera. Did almost everything on the optimization guide except hyper threading since i have a AMD CPU. Logged in, Presets set to 3, Island of Dawn, lv 65, 37 FPS...... welll........ it did not lagg, but thats because I have not gone into a dungeon yet. Still, i expected better.

This game doesn't like AMD very well (i've got an FX8350 and r7 260x and i have issues with fps). The best thing to do is keep the graphics set to 0 and just make minor tweaks to things you want, like visual distance. A lot of the issues are CPU related though, plus a lot of poor optimization.

Try excluding the TERA folder in your AVG settings.

But to give you a better idea as to why it lags so bad:
-There are unused UI still being loaded into the memory (unless BHS/EME have at least officially removed those)
-The version of the Scaleform BHS used for the UI is very outdated, they used a version that made the UI run off of CPU instead of GPU like everything else
-Certain aspects of the UI run multiple functions that are bogging down the core(s) that it's being ran on (buff icons on party screen, enraged effect on boss bar, etc)
-(Supposedly) There is a relatively bad memory leak that's caused by the UI itself.

So, essentially, there really is only so much we can do (such as null UI files so they don't get loaded, disable certain effects in the UI's) without BHS actually cleaning up their entire UI system.
