Q: How much are you guys comfortable spending on art?

Hi guys! I hope this is in the right thread. I'm thinking about opening an art shop soon, but I'm wondering if I should and how.
My art would range in the veryveryveryvery expensive side, so I'm wondering:

- How much are you comfortable spending on high quality art or art in general?
- Would you prefer a scenario where there's one slot a month that's bid on for a certain amount of time instead?
- Any other great suggests you guys might have~ C: I would love to hear them!

  • o/ Hello Ithacan. Your in the right place!
    As for if / should. Really depends on you <3

    But the question is. Are we talking in-game gold or ?

    Each Artist set's a price for certain styles.
    Styles are usually Sketches, Chibi, Half-body and Full-body.
    As for how they determine pricing? Well, I couldn't tell you that. :pleased:
    Would probably be best to take a look at some of their work and quality and what they charge.
    Some even charge for coloring or extras.

    As for how much people are willing to spend?
    Depends on the Artist's work & Style really. Need some examples!

    As for the scenario. Sounds like a bidding war for a spot to have a commission done?
    Don't get what your really saying there. But if that's the case, I'm not for it personally.
    I'd rather get a spot, pay and let the artist do their stuff.

    Maybe do a event a month or something like, Buy 1 Style, Get a 2nd style half-off?
    I dunno lol

  • All of the above questions really depend on style.
    From a personal buyer's perspective, I've spent $100 max on a single character colored art piece, thighs up. I've also spent 150k in-game gold for the same exact commission, but from a different seller.

    As far as a bidding system goes, check out rice365.tumblr.com. He takes three slots a month (has taken a break since I've last commissioned them,) with bids starting at a minimum of 100k I believe. So, this works out really well for the artist if you're not looking to spend hours each day of the month to finish commissions, while also making more than enough in-game currency, or money if you don't plan to open commissions on the forums.

    Provide examples of your art and people will be able to give you a rough estimate on how much they think your art can go for. At the end of the day, it's your art; charge what you think your time and effort is worth.

    A suggestion: only accept commissions you think you have the time for. Never stress yourself out to complete numerous commissions from multiple people. If you think you can only handle one commission a month, please stick to that. I've seen a lot of artists stress over completing commissions on time, and then have to stop taking commissions for months on end just to give themselves a break.

    I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck if you plan on opening for commissions. Remember that your well-being is number one priority.
  • Hey guys! Thanks for a quick reply!

    Here's the most recent example of my art, but I'm working on pieces to specifically use as examples for commissions in the future. Most of the stuff I've been working on has been personal projects I'm not ready to share yet. xD

    @ratedX
    I would be charging gold prices based on MT and have an idea what to price, my worry is my artwork won't fit the demographic and seeing a lot of artists undercharging themselves (But my math's based on MT's emp gold ratio; it could be something completely different on another server).

    @Nqrse
    *checks out tumblr*

    *follows artist 5 seconds later* :>
    And don't worry! I'm going to start small and work myself up from there. After a couple commissions, I think I'll be able to gauge what I can handle.
    Thank you!

    @YOI
    In game gold! I promise! :) But your post has got me thinking, I think I'm swaying towards selling art elsewhere, but I'm not sure yet. It does seem like the wiser option though.
    I want to be as realistic with the prices in way that is fair to both parties.

    Thank you to everyone that's replied! You've all have been a huge help!

    Now i can see why your asking :open_mouth:
    Very lovely and detailed piece you did there
  • AulonAulon ✭✭✭✭
    For a very detailed full body colored I would be willing to pay 150-300k gold, now I am very picky, I have a certain taste as well and not in the market to get one.
  • ArdireArdire ✭✭✭✭✭
    For an art style as detailed as that I would be willing to pay far more than just 100k-- can't give an exact amount of course, 'cause that's subjective and up to how comfortable you are pricing your own art, but just saying not to go below that amount else you'd be selling yourself way short. Aulon gave a good ballpark, 150k-300k sounds about right. I'd probably never pay over 500k for any sort of art unless it was like... a really big detailed piece with multiple characters and what not.
  • Depends on the quality of the artwork. My budget limit would be around a mil, but if it's an artist I really love (for example, Rice and Elna), I might be willing to go more than that. I think having a large portfolio of previous pieces or examples really helps drive up your price.
  • Bust 150k.
    Half 190k
    Full 230k
    Two chars = double the price!

    Full painting with one character, background, and other elements like pets, etc... 300k.

    From a business point of view, since your art is much more high quality than a lot of the simpler art around here, you'd want to offer a full package. If someone's willing to pay 230k for a character, they'll most probably be willing to pay 70k more, for a full painting to go along with their character.

    There are a select few (maybe 3 or 4?) this year that have also offered art pieces nearing this quality and at that price!

    Don't sell yourself short! If you're wondering where these numbers came from, those are the prices I'd pay for one when you open shop (hopefully!!!) :)
