Control Pad?

Hey guys,

I'm happy that i can use a control pad in game (don't use mouse and keyboard) but how viable is it in endgame dungeons? I've decided to start with brawler as it seems the easiest with combo chains.

thanks

Back in August of 2015 I switched from gaming with a keyboard and mouse set up to strictly using the Steam Controller. It isn't just as good as a KB/M, it's better.

  • It's not so bad. I started out with a controller but switched to a hybrid setup with the G13 keypad so I wouldn't lose the analog stick for moving my character. Only downside would be aiming. A mouse will always be more precise and faster in terms of aiming your skills.

Here's a decent guide to get you started
  • With the Steam Controller, you can set the right track pad for mouse input. Now you have the normal controller advantages plus you still get the accuracy of a mouse.
  • I have been using a controller since I started playing. It's quite simple to set up and enjoy. Instead of a steam controller try out a ps4 or an xbox controller. Those work the best in my opinion.
  • The problem with a PS or XBox controller is that you can't really turn the camera quickly. I can flip the camera around to where ever I need it as fast as if I had my G500 gaming mouse. Also, the Steam Controller is cheaper.
  • I had a few of both laying around and figured why not. Also, Xpadder can help with the turning.
  • I'm too use to KB/M, I suppose, to play with a normal controller. :/
  • Back in the day when ABHM was the hardest dungeon i remember seeing a video of a reaper in full archetype clearing it with a controller with no issues.

Ofcourse, it was a reaper, i dont think every class works well with a controller.
  • Any class can work with a controller. Only you can make it work
  • Everything works well with a Steam Controller.

I've been rolling a pad since I first started playing the game back in the Wounded World patch (I don't have the dexterity to play a game like this on K&M, and getting an MMO mouse isn't really in the cards). While I'm certainly no expert, here's my advice:

    - Take the time to map your buttons exactly how you want them. And if you plan on using multiple characters, use the same scheme for all of them to make things easier for yourself.
    - Be picky with your skills. Since you don't have the versatility of a keyboard/mouse, you'll have to consolidate which skills you're going to use. Look around to see what's worth your time and what isn't, and adjust accordingly.
    - Use the chain system, love the chain system. Unless your controller has a ton of buttons (like the aforementioned Steam Controller), you're going to need this. Similar to the above, do some quick research and adjust accordingly.
    - Camera controls. As the TERAToday guide mentions, it's advised to use "camera direction" for ranged classes and "character direction" for melee classes. Just use whatever works best for you.
    - Practice, practice, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, then practice some more. It's going to feel a bit wacky playing pad at first and you're going to be at a slight disadvantage due to a variety of factors (slower camera movement, slower skill activation, rotations may be more difficult to perform, etc), but with enough time and practice, you'll be able to run and clear dungeons with the best of them and other players will be none the wiser. :)
    - If nothing else, just look at the TERAToday guide posted above. It helps a big huggy bunch.

Hope this all helps. Good luck and may the Force be with you! :chuffed:
  • Thanks for the support guys - the steam controller does look ideal. Does it come with tera pre-sets?
  • More or less. It comes with a mouse + 360 layout already ready to go. You just have to select it. I've made quite a few modifications to mine. Other people have uploaded their control schemes as well.

Yeah, think I've mad up my mind about getting the controller - Yes, the camera for me is the issue. Thanks mate appreciated!

Oh, if i need any info about various inputs can i contact you via PM?
  • Absolutely. Actually, I've been thinking of making a Steam Controller thread, but I'm too lazy.
