Ways to improve performance while recording TERA?

Hello! There's a similar thread here right now about what programs to use but -
Currently when I use OBS to record gameplay my Framerate tanks down to 20-below. Normally I'll have at least 30FPS which is bearable but under 20 I start suffering from the low FPS. Other than using Shadowplay what other options would be available to me for recording and having less of an impact on the game?

  • I've been getting into recording recently for self critique and such and use Obs to do that as well.

I use nvenc encoding which uses the H.x256 encoder build into my GTX 970. I makes it so there is minimal load on your processor because unlike traditional x256 encoding the actual recording is done on your graphics card rather than your processor. Since TERA is such a cpu intensive game this helps a lot.

If you don't have that option however, I'd recommend getting a capture card and importing it as a video source in Obs. It basically does the same thing but on an entirely separate card.

Also if you have Shadowplay than you should have the nvenc option as shadowplay uses the same thing. Other than that change the recording quality to indistinguishable and don't use the same quality as your stream.

One final thing you might try is having as few sources in the recording as possible and disabling the preview while you're recording. If your using Obs studio then all of the sources you have continue to run in the background even if you're on a different scene if you don't manually disable them.

What are your specs while you're at it?
  • Unless you have an Nvidia gpu for ShadowPlay, OBS has been my next best choice.
