Archer or Gunner - Advice?
In my never-ending quest to find the “perfect” class based upon my interests, I have narrowed them down to either the Archer or the Gunner. While I enjoy both for different reasons, I’m having a difficult time finalizing on one to focus on as my main. Due to my personal life requirements, I simply don’t have the time to actively play an alt.
With that being said, I have come up with a short PRO/CON list for each class in PvE and PvP. This is based upon my own experience thus far and if possible, I was wondering if you all could give me your thoughts on this list and let me know if it is accurate or if I’m full of crap.
I should note that I’m a fairly casual player who tends to focus most of my time on PvP and dueling. As such, I focus on the PvP side of the game much more than I would doing dungeons. Either way, I want to make sure I contribute to my team and not be the person that is carried by others.
THE GUNNER
PRO:
1. Very intuitive, flowing combat.
2. Very simple to master
3. Excellent DPS and easy to solo just about everything while leveling.
4. (PVP) Great for group PvP with lots of AoE that can easily target players from behind or do damage through walls.
5. Not very gear dependent in end game.
6. Can easily recover from mistakes.
CON:
1. After about a week of playing, the simplicity of the class tends to feel so easy that I can smash my face into the keyboard and still top the DPS charts. No real concern about focusing and improving a solid rotation.
2. Mobility feels limited even with the bot trick.
3. (PVP) Skills are easily predictable and rely too much lucky instant-cast resets.
4. (PvP) In dueling or solo PvP, the class feels completely dependent upon 2-3 skills – each of which are easily avoided.
5. Lacks CC abilities.
6. The massive gun just looks stupid (Sorry… RP person here too).
THE ARCHER
PRO:
1. Crazy amounts of burst DPS.
2. Lots of CC and mobility.
3. (PVP) Can fairly easily 100-0 a player who gets caught in a CC + burst combo.
4. (PVP) Decent enough in group PvP with AoE and traps.
5. Actually requires some thought on how to build and play a solid damage rotation.
CON:
1. Extremely gear dependent to be successful in end game PvP or PvE.
2. Lacks overall DPS in end game PvE.
3. Can die fairly easily if mistakes are made in solo farming groups of mobs.
4. Several useless skills (poison arrow).
5. DPS gimped due to over-lapping skills (mark) from other Archers.

Ok, stupid question but why? I keep reading that Archer's pretty much suck compared to a Gunner.
A year ago, yes, but after Gunner had been nerfed over and over again, with Archer being buffed, that is not the case anymore. People saying that are just stuck in the past. If you're looking for effectiveness, just go with Archer. It already does more damage, and with the changes it is getting the class is going to be superior in every way.
Thanks Yamazuki!
My Archer is only level 36 so far and even though I've found that I have to think more when pulling a crap-ton of mobs, the class is pretty fun. I also really love the animations with the Castanic.
Final Salvo gets revamped, it becomes pretty decent dps skill.
Pros:
2. Lots of CC yes, mobility no, you're less mobile than gunner.
Cons:
1. Just as gear dependant as gunner
2. Just not true, also getting buffed in an upcoming patch anyway
3. Might be true but I'm not sure what this matters at current and you have a free disengage via feign death
4. Maybe 1-3 skills are totally useless. I don't really see how this is a big negative since I don't personally want to have 20 skills I need to worry about all the time
5. This is going to be fixed in an upcoming patch but I haven't found it to be problem outside of IMing DF and even then, that dungeon is so easy you don't need to worry about it.
Thanks for updating what I thought was correct! This really helps a ton and is a reason why these forums are so amazing - people really help out.
dps rank Archer >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ninja, Sorc >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rest.
It's an incredible PvE skill for its animation cancelling value. You just tap it off after any of your skill that you can and it's a huge dps boost to be able to start a new skill very early.
