Tera Economy Collapsed and why EME is at fault

1. Mongos and similar events
Players who participated literally farmed millions of gold worth of mats. They didn't actually have to "participate" either, just stay in a raid while afking and receive parcel posts. I'm not exaggerating, literally millions of gold worth of mats to individual players who participated.
Prices of MW alks, Extensive alks, Premium alks, Spellbinds, and Feedstocks have dropped in price by half in a matter of a month.

2. Loot boxes
Loot boxes currently give a TON of mats compared to before.
There might be 2 contributing factors for this. EMP is bought less from people who would have sold EMP to gear their chars due to the incredibly low cost of materials. Another factor can be that loot boxes needs to be seen as "worth it" to be desirable.

After the debacle of dragons, EME hosted another event similar to mongos. The event only lasted 1 hour but the mob spawning rate was so high that players who participated farmed thousands of materials once again. Speaking from my own experience, I have gotten 3000 tier 9 feeds, 3000 tier 10 feeds, 600 spellbinds, 3400 personal extensive, 600 mw alks, 1100 gold fingers, 33 Strongbox keys, and some other things. Everyone in our guild who participated have gotten similar amounts within just 1 hour of the event. Now imagine all the players who participated, so much materials easily farmed in 1 hour of play.

Lets look at the Pros and Cons.

Pros:
  • Players who participated are instant millionaires. JACKPOT 777
  • Players who haven't participated can buy mats at a lower price.

Cons:
  • Players who participated in essence have "beaten" the game. They no longer have to farm for anything for next 2-3 patches besides obtaining gear. They become less active.
  • Players who haven't participated are now months behind players who did participate. They can be discouraged and also become less active or quit as some have already said on forums.
  • The rich get richer. The gap between the rich and poor players widen. When these events happen, rich players benefit the most. When prices tank, they buy the mats out and keep them until the next content patch to resell at lot higher price. Rich players have the funds to massively buy out the cheap mats. Poor players and even players who participated only have the mats they farmed, they don't have the gold to buy out more.

Spacecats is planning another event for October. I hope it's not going to hand out mats again and further destroy the market. When everything is just handed out, what is the point of playing anymore? Players will quit if there's nothing to do anymore.

*Edit
Would also like to add that the economy also contributes to EMP to Gold rates in game. It's not just inflation that affects it. It has to do with demand and supply. When supply goes down(less players selling EMP) demand goes up. Wealthy players sitting on millions of gold are still willing to pay absurd amounts of gold for them. Currently on my server EMP is 1:40. By the time Halloween and Black Friday rolls in, I wouldn't be surprised when EMP rates go up to 1:50-75.

I participated from both mongo events. Why I am not still rich? I demand my millions!

Pretty much spot on. The funny thing is we haven't even seen the full effects of mongos yet. Wait till the 2nd-3rd week of next gear patch and it'll be really evident :awesome:

I still like and will like event like mongo, the 1 h event since u can get good stuff from it and it helps alot with +15 rng . MORE EVENTS LIKE THIS PLS so evryone can farm mats or buy it cheaper from the TB . I dont see any problem with this at all to be honest

If you look at the game in long term, continuous events of these kinds will make mats worth 10g each. When players are just handed everything, there is no point in playing anymore. All the fun is gone, no feelings of accomplishment. Eventually the game will die out...
  • But what if they're doing it on purpose to make the players that didn't get in on the event feel forced to sell EMP to get the moniez?

3 years ago when I started this game, spellbind and alkahest were cheap. So its back to how it was 3 years ago. Nothing wrong with that, because that means even new players can find their way around.

Pretty much perfectly sum it up.
  • Alot of players who gained loads of enchanting supplies are keeping them.

Prices remain low cause no gear to make and not many need supplies.

When Vm8 hits, prices should go up, atm its prime time to buy from broker and stack up materials for vm8.

Gold in TERA is a facade commodity, it was one of the best way to ride the game of gold sellers, make gold useless. You do not need it unless you create the need for it in yourself.

True, having millions of gold is pretty pointless unless you are really lazy player and can't bother anykind of farming outside of vm grind.

Edit:Since BHS changed VM crafting, tons of gold will be thrown at designs to make your weapon.

Agreed for the most part but this is because TERA lacks side content

Players who haven't participated are now months behind players who did participate. They can be discouraged and also become less active or quit as some have already said on forums.

Maybe but you also fail to see other points. Those who did share with friends as I seen it in the drown I am around. This builds the essence of a community in which MMOs thrive on.

The rich get richer. The gap between the rich and poor players widen. When these events happen, rich players benefit the most. When prices tank, they buy the mats out and keep them until the next content patch to resell at lot higher price. Rich players have the funds to massively buy out the cheap mats. Not true on all points, those that are rich play the game to get rich. They will get rich with or with out these events. If any thing it created an oppertunity for those left behind to catch up.

People rant about the grind then rant its not grindy enough, think they focus is on those who just want to enjoy the game with friends and it should remain that way. Those who focus on how much they can earn and stand out burn out the fastest and leave, those focused on fun will find a away to have it with friends. Keep doing events, keep making side content to get us out of the instance grind.

There are many other factors involved in current prices. A more likely combination is:

    1. People saving money for dragons, therefore not buying anything. Less demand.
    2. People running guild quests. Lots of them. Therefore, more mats of all types to sell, consistently and not just for a short time like after an event. More supply. Loot boxes are probably contributing here, too, but I doubt as much as the scramble to get those guild skills.

These seem to me to be a larger contributor to our current market prices than anything mentioned by OP.
  • Right now the demand for mats is low, and people who wanted to craft gear already did. 2xDrop rate and 3x drop rate increases demand. Those events push people who did not or could not get it before into craft gear and sellers can sell their stock piles of mats. So I consider it a win-win situation. Also take in consideration that we are close to the end of the patch, people are saving their gold for next patch or dragons because rng box are terrible. The mats of the rng box at least lessens the frustration of not getting what you wanted.
  • Until materials you need 1000s of to have any chance at the high level endgame stuff are actually affordable (>100g each is not affordable) I see zero problem with events like this. The market if anything is at a standstill because you have 2 main groups of items: Low-level items endgame people have no use for, which are very cheap, and high-level items for ridiculous amounts of gold, that nobody with a life or without years to spend farming can amass on a regular basis. I see items on shop for tens or hundreds of thousands of gold.. even thousands of gold for stuff that honestly someone can burn through (like mwa for example) without even having a definite chance it'll get them anywhere. There are two markets because there are two groups of players. Those poor and those rich, and the poor market with its own high/low prices, and the rich market with all high prices. If anything we need more events like the mongos etc so that getting from new to new-65 to decent 65 isn't such a backbreaking, soulcrushing, chance-restricted grind. People with hundreds of thousands of gold just don't have these kinds of problems, and no, it's not "easy" to get that much either. Not unless you want to dedicate all of your waking life to the game for years.
  • economy is suffering cus game is dying. we had no relevant patches for so long, its only normal.
