Pc shutdown issues, want opinions.

So I've recently upgraded from a tiny little APU system to a big APU system. For those who might be thinking, yes, Tera runs fine on an integrated chip system.
But i have a little problem. After some time, the game started crashing on random occasions, usually from 10 minutes to 30. Yes i did overclock a bit, and i tried stock clockspeeds with the same thing happening. lately ive been suspecting the ram but ramtest shows no errors, even tried with slower clockspeeds and subtimes set to 12. Still problems. Now i would be posting this on a hardware site if it were a problem on all the games, but this only happens on Tera. I do play witcher 3 and other stuff that requires some horsepower just to compare.

Im running A-10-7870k
DDR3 Vengeance 4x4gb 2133mhz
hyperX SSD 120gb
TX 430 +80bronze

Any opinions? im currently trying everything i can, ill be updating.

If your PC shutsdown after that time, then is most likely that your PC is overheating. Current systems have a safety measure that shuts em down automatically if the temperatures are too high. TERA uses a lot of CPU resources, so it may be because of that. I suggest to get a Liquid Cooling system and check the temps when TERA is running.

I was thinking the same thing.

Get a program like HWmonitor, that monitors CPU temps.

It could be your overclock being too high, or even your cooling system failing.

If you have a liquid cooling system, it could be the pump going bad.
  • I thought so too. But the problem happens in normal clock speed. When dealing with apus hw monitor is a no-go, since it shows that my cpu is 80c at idle... What. I use amd overdrive and it shows that my pc runs around 40c while in tera. I confirmed it with feeling the heatsink myself which is only slightly warm to the touch. I havent underclocked though but whats the point. Ive also tried multiple vcore voltages and ive gone with around 1.45v. I clocked the processor from 3.9 to 4.4 which is in the range of what people do with this processor. The ram is underclocked right now. And yesterdays memtest shows that both sticks are a okay.

When i get off from work ill try different drivers. This just crossed my mind.

Ps. Thr computer doesnt bsod it just shuts down.
  • Hard to tell without screenshots. But it sounds like your heatsink isn't all the way in there. Unless you're liquid cooling, there should be no way your cpu will stay at 40c on tera. Just because the heatsink is cool to the touch doesn't mean it's working. That actually means the heatsink is only getting warmed up by the hot air around the cpu instead of the cpu heat getting transferred to the heatsink directly.
  • it seems like a heat issue also what kind of power supply do you use because the PSU can also cause issues you should look into that as well is it old new what wattage is it etc just a thought.

If HWmonitor is saying 80c, then there's your problem!

If the heat sink isn't hot, that means it's not properly transferring heat from the processor. I would check the contact with the CPU, and make sure the thermal compound is good.

Even at idle, 80c is very much possible, if your cooling system isn't working.

If I were to believe HW monitor then my old cpu withstood 90 celsius. That's kind of nice, it ran for 10 hours no sweat. sure ill post some screenshots. the 40c must have been the socket temp but in reality it might be near 50 or something. I'm not so sure, ive never been sure.

    Pics.

Also lets not forget that tera runs fine if i take one stick of ram off, sure its laggy but it doesn't crash.(I ran it for 4 hours or something.) Like i said the rams fine according to memtest but im starting to suspect my MB. Also theres no way its the apu, but i cant be certain unless i try different drivers for the gpu side of it. who knows. this might take all night. No way im giving up on my MB.

Also heres a link for those who wanna read on thermal stuff.

    Edit:

Ive been playing witcher3 all night, would you believe the machine runs hotter than when in tera. I guess i was wrong, it can heat up quite (about 5 more celsius) a bit. Still not enough to overheat.

The driver update/revert did nothing. Still crashing only while in Tera.
Should i try ram hungrier games?

Im using an XTX TS 430, It should be well enough for some 100w that the Apu unit uses. My cooler uses the same amount though.
As for the cooler, it's an Arctic Freezer A 11, and yes its the first thing i looked at when i started to have crashing.

  • Found the problem. My MB doesn't like xmp mode or ram clocking over 1600 mhz. technically you could say its because of my overclocking... but no, im currently running a 700mh overclock and its doing fine. Next step is to OC the ram the right way, i mean its a shame i cant use more than 1600mhz. any tips?

after some digging since it not being heat which is usually the case on a sudden shutdown, the processor can have issues with OC's and directx 9, not 11 or 12 by all accounts but 9 specifically. witcher 3 is 11 and 12. tera is dx9 in unreal 3. so find another stable OC for dx9, or look for drivers that might fix the issue.

to test, try a long running dx9 stress or benchmark testing. no guarantee however that they'll hit whatever execution tera is shutting down the system on. calls from the app not handled properly can potentially cause a bad instruction and system just says NOPE and shuts down.

Get new RAM. If the sticks are still under warrenty RMA them. The problem will only get worse over time.

Overheating cpu or your power supply is the cause of your shutdowns is my guess. First check your CPU temps using whichever software you prefer (i use "openhardwaremonitor") unless your cpu temps are going over 75c then its probably the power supply, a 430w is not very much, most up-to-date compenents draw more power than your psu is rated for(when combined that is), id recommend going to a 750w+ and make sure to stick with a quality namebrand like corsair or antec. Also tera is a cpu intensive game and APU's dont handle it well (ive gone through 2 different ones while playing tera) also i doubt this is contributing to your shutdowns but the fact that your running an AMD build means tera probly runs like [filtered] for you even on low settings.. tera was built on intel/nvidia platforms and will always run 1000000x better on an intel system, my fps alone increased x10 (224fps peak in HW on max settings) after swtiching to intel, before the switch i never saw fps above 25 and even being above 20 was rare.

hope you find your fix <3

This is not a problem anymore. i run the game crash free in the mid 30 low 20 and high 45 fps marks now (mind you im running heavily optimised settings), it's more than enough to play the game. Also 700+ power supply? You do realize that the system i sport uses like barely half if even of the 430? it's an apu not titan X.

As for new ram... im working on it. And ill continue to optimise the system.
I guess i wasn't too obvious with the earlier post, but my system runs now, yay.

I guess i should try out a single stick with 2000+mhz.
