FPS Issue, Please help me

Hello guys,
I'm sorry if I'm in the wrong section, wasn't sure where to create the post.

Well, I have these pc specs:

CPU: Fx-6300
GPU: Gtx 960
RAM: 8Gb

Yet still even with lowest settings my FPS range while in dungeons or CS or FW or populated towns is something like 15~25 FPS, which is very unpleasant to play and to watch (because to me the game looks awfull with everything lowered).

I believe something is wrong, While I OC'd my GPU with MSI Afterburner (I managed to obtain 1550 MHz Core Clock boost) I noticed that neither my GPU nor my CPU was really being used.

This Image shows the statistics while playing a dungeon with lowest settings possible:

MSI_statistics_TERA_DG_Lowest.png

Here's the statistics written:

GPU Power: 32%
GPU Temperature: 57º
GPU Usage: 30%
Memory Usage: 500 MB

CPU Temperature: 52º
CPU Usage: 42%
RAM Usage: 4500 MB
Pagefile Usage: 6500 MB

FPS: 15~25 during boss fights (averaging 20)

Now the Statistics while playing the same dg with everything maxed:

MSI_statistics_TERA_DG_Highest.png

Statistics written:

GPU Power: 55%
GPU Temperature: 57º
GPU Usage: 50%
Memory Usage: 900 MB

CPU Temperature: 53º
CPU Usage: 45%
RAM Usage: 5000 MB
Pagefile Usage: 7200 MB

FPS: 10~25 During boss fights (averaging 14)

While traveling and fighting BAM's alone in the world my FPS is pretty good even with everything maxed out (40~70 during some fights), but if I'm entering a dg or bg I have to lower everything and still get crappy FPS besides a terrible looking game.

Maybe I'm overrating my pc a little, but i really think these low FPS's are not right for my pc specs, specially the ones with everything lowered.

I'd really love if any of you guys could help me with that, coz when it comes to endgame dg's and bg's are my main activities, and it's being pretty unpleasant to play them the way i'm playing.

From now, I thank you all for the attention,
Enjoy the game, thanks.

Hi there, your CPU and GPU is match each other and can gain amount of FPS in other games, but not TERA. Because TERA run heavily on CPU, not GPU. You might want to check your CPU stats using Windows Resource Monitor.

If you check your CPU resource monitor, even using simple Task Manager, you may see Core 0, (1st core) is running at 95-100% Utilization and 98-100% Frequency Speed while other cores probably running only at 25-55% at Utilization.

    These are some my suggestion:
1 - Get your CPU cooled with proper CPU cooler, not stock cooler. Water-cooled is recommended but it's expensive but big fan cooler is good enough.
2 - Get your casing properly aired with intake and outtake.
3 - To further reduce "lag-spike" in terms of FPS or so, get SSD. SSHD is also good though. Just make sure your Windows isn't running on 5400-RPM HHD or "storage-HDD".

P/S: Since you're running with GTX, did you optimized with Nvidia GeForce Experience Center?
For me it did help, but I changed some settings for my eyes-candy.

    For extreme:
1 - Disable other core, run with dual-core or single-core, then overclock it as maximum it can. You may gain more FPS with this.
2 - If you're running with Intel core, disable hyper-threading and other core.
3 - Change your Paging File into another HDD, not another Partition.

  • Hello,
    Thanks for the support

I chose to monitor ir using the MSI Afterburner,
Here are the results after playing a dungeon at max settings:

    MSI_statistics_TERA_DG_Highest_CPU_graphic.png

None of them were beeing fully used, though some were used more than others, the most used one averaging 75% usage.

I tried to optimize it with GeForce Experience, used the ideal settings and in game lowered everything as low as it can be.

I would love to follow your advice on disabling other cores and run with dual core and overclock them (besides i don't really know how to do this, but i'd ressearch), but it seems its not the case for me since no CPU unit is being fully loaded, and the game seems to be using a reasonable part of the others cpu units exept for maybe 2.

I have a Java Pcyes case, which has 1 frontal fan (intaking) and one back top fan (outtaking) and the PSU stands in the bottom of the case, i tried to leave the case open but saw no considerable gain in terms of temperature.

I have an 500 GB (300 GB free space if that matters) 7200 RPM, but the FPS spikes (which are not many) arent really the issue, but the average FPS.

I'm thankfull for your attention anyway
    peace.
  • Do you run through steam? The overlay is known to cause massive fps issues to some players (note: -some-)
  • Thank you all again

    I dont run on steam.

Also, I can run max settings fine if I'm leveling a character or not in a dg or bg or a populated city.
The real problem is when I try to enter a dg or bg, I wouldn't care to have max settings on dg's or bg's, but even with the lowest settings possible its is still bad FPS, 20 FPS average while in a dungeon with the lowest settings is really very unpleasant, to play and to watch.
But I'd still be ok with playing it at lowest settings and having and acceptable FPS.

Well, I'm gonna look for those tweeks on google then.
You can't tell me about them here, but can you show me a site, or post, or something that have these informations ?

Again, thanks for all the support.

What can I say, Tera is poorly optimized.
Maybe if we have a mainframe computer and tweak it to dual-core then maybe we can have average 60+ FPS in dungeon.

Anyway this is the famous Bernkastel's TERA Optimization Guide.
  • @Kimiho btw forgot to ask if remove party UI buffs?

For additional eyes-candy, search SweetFx for Tera.
    Link of image comparison.
  • I also had issue with amd processor (FX 8350); built new pc 2 weeks ago and tera was very low fps for me as well even after optimizing everything (tweaks, ui removal, windows def exception, etc). Spent a few hours messing with a lot of things and reading different guides from years ago but nothing helped.

Maybe doing something with the cores might help like someone mentioned, which I did not try but for me I ended up returning my amd fx 8350 cpu with the motherboard since I was not as satisfied. I replaced it with i5 cpu. All the hassle of removing and replacing my new system was worth it and I can easily get over 100 FPS in tera now. I get a lot that I had to end up putting a limit because I don't want my amd 480x video card to use too much gpu. Not saying that this is the best option but it's a good alternative to go this route if nothing else works.

1 - Tera is poorly optimized, just think it's like Crysis.
2 - It is a fact that Tera is bad at CPU utilization, eg: Intel's Hyper-threading or multi-core utilization. The fact that most MMO (including Tera) are coded to use only one core are also one of reason why Tera is bad at CPU utilization.
3 - Tera runs heavily on CPU, not GPU. It doesn't matter even you have GTX 1080 or AMD RX 480, it may only have little effect on Tera overall performance or FPS.
4 - AMD CPU (all series) are known to be bad at running Tera than Intel Core (i5, i7 series and above) due it's lower performance per-core. Others Intel Core, i3 and lower are also not good. (They aren't even for gaming!)
5 - SSD is excellent for FPS stuttering fix. Although SSHD is good enough, rather than conventional HDD.
6 - Large RAM do help - Effect on FPS stuttering.
7 - Put Paging File into another partition help overall PC performance. Unless you're using SSD.

Would like to point out some GPUs can actually be the cause of low performance issues, especially freezing. There are some lower end Nvidia/AMD gpus that caused problems, with the problem going away with a different gpu and no other changes. I had a 960 reference card that had problems with Tera and replacing it fixed the issue. There was also an issue with an AMD card in dungeons like TS 2nd boss, or SS imp. For SS imp restarting prevented the issues which was an inconvenience but for cases like TS 2nd boss there was nothing that fixed it.

I have same setup with weaker GPU and I get 60-100 at open world and 30-50 during boss fights. Thats with max graphical settings, everything else that involves characters, turned off.

Unpark your cores, that should help alot with fps. I tested running TERA with 3 cores and yeah, game uses 90%+ on all 3 cores, but I gained no fps and if you like to do stuff on a side, lag heaven.

Having lowest or highest settings via option menu have close to no effect for fps, everything turned off, i gained like 5 fps maybe.
  • i had the same issues with FPS on my AMD FX 8350 when i upgraded to the Intel Core i7 6700K @4.5ghz my fps issues disappeared way better FPS 60+ running max details @4K 3840x2160 so yeah Tera is badly Optimized and runs like garbage on AMD CPU'S. And the settings even all the way down make no difference.
  • I can confirm that it's no longer possible to run Tera decently after Schm patch (early 2015) on AMD CPU. I had to upgrade to an Intel 4790k. No problem til now.
  • Correct me if I'm wrong but If you unpark your cpu, make sure you have a good cooler. I believe if you unpark the cpu, it will run hotter than it usually does and if you're having a stock cooler, that may pose an issue.
