AMD and tera...

Dear Tera players,

As some of you already know, Tera and AMD hardware don't go along with each other .
Before i am going to ask the question, i want to make clear that i am aware of the uncountable so called 'fpsboost-guides'. Yes i tried tweaking my ini-files, yes i updated my drivers, yes i overclocked my CPU and so on....
Of course i also play other games, in particular; League of Legends and Counter Strike Global Offensive. I can play both games on MAX graphics without any fps lag or whatsoever..

This is my setup:

CPU: AMD FX8320E (Overlocked to 3.5Ghz.)
VGA:AMD RX480 8GB OC version
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 1336mhz
HDD: 1TB 5400 rpm (Tera installed in this)
SSD: 60GB (Windows on this)

When i have presets on 0 and i am standing near the broker in Highwatch my fps is like 30 max. When i am just outside highwatch i have 50 max. When i do Forsaken island or Kalivans my fps is 5-15 and so NOT playable.
Even though i feel like i have decent computer i can't believe this is the MAX i can get in TERA.
Are there people that can help me?

    After you've done this right click on the file you just saved, and click on "Properties" then select "read only" on the bottom left. Hit "Apply" then "OK"
    Now start your game and test it. If there's anything you'd like to change then let me know, and I'll be more than happy to adjust it for you. This is a "bare minimum without loss of fidelity" setting that gives a more stable framerate to AMD - It's not great for giving MAX FPS but it definitely helps level them out while giving a small boost. It's what i personally use alongside a few other modifications that are a bit less "novice" (more tricky) to do.

    I would like to say thank you very much!. I tested this config by standing out side of highwatch. Normally i get like 40 fps and now i have 50 fps. I need to test it at forsaken and kd but i hear people say that those dungeons are fps eaters. Maybe we can tweak this config a bit more which i hope of course.

    Yes, AMD CPUs don't work well with Tera because it's not optimized for using that many cores.

    Your hard drive is really slow too.

    look up optimization guides. i run an 8120FX, no OC, nvidia 650GTX, 16GB ddr3, and tera's installed on a 1TB 7200rpm drive. and tend to have fps around double what you're showing. besides optimization, tera sometimes does not run well with OC's. eliminate excess processes, they use cpu cycles and that can slow tera's fps. disable AV and anti malware when running tera, they don't need to be on anyway and they also consistently suck cpu cycles.

    basically reduce excess load on the cpu, even though it's multi core many apps/games won't schedule well nor does windows at times. there's a few apps around that can force reluctant programs to use specific cores as well as save priority and core preferences. core parking can be another issue...and there's apps for that as well.

    Sorry to say but i DID mention i followed optimization guides. The reaon why i OC'd was cuz it was performing like sh*t. I don't have any spy-virus scanner active but windows defender.
  • In my experience, tera is happiest with at least 2 4.2ghz CPU cores. Your graphics card plays very little part in performance as long as it's a half decent mid range one.
  • Funny fact: Few or fewer weeks ago, I changed my old MSI AMD Radeon R9 270 2GB to ASUS STRIX GTX 1060 6 GB OC, didn't touch anything else, and still need to use the same tweaks as before to not have fps drops below 20 (and even with tweaks I can have few of them) in dungeons. Only things I was able to change are video settings in game, but I'm still not using shadows or anti-aliasing.
  • Please can not compare the graphics of CS and LOL with Tera, obviously will need more resources for play.
  • Do you launch tera via steam? If so, try launching TERA via the launcher itself and not from steam. Steam overlay made my game unplayable in every dungeon (I have a R7 360)

    Please learn what you're talking about if you are going to talk about it.

    The reason that AMD, and TERA don't get along is simple.
    AMD has CRAP for IPC (Instructions Per Clock) -
    A clock is basically a "cycle." Each "cycle" the processor can only transmit so many electrons and the reason that AMD doesn't play well with TERA is because AMD has ALWAYS (since the athlon series came out) had really HORRID IPC.

    You stated that you've tried "all the INI guides out there" well, most AMD users have, and what they don't know is that there's a MUCH easier fix - It's called Overclocking your Core, and CPU NorthBridge, and RAM which still isn't going to do much of anything for you.

    Alternatively you could play the game without complaint and understand that the nice little "budget cut" that you attempted to take is going to cost you on ANYTHING like WoW, TERA, RIFT, and countless other MMORPG's that quite frankly "don't use your GPU for much of anything besides textures."
    TERA has Physics too, which just make it all the more worse, then you have the added calculation being thrown into the request pool by liquid effects, particle emitters, and all the god forsaken effects that are being culled at the same time, and well...
    Congratulations - You found out why AMD is horrible at MMO's and the same thing that people have known since 2004 when World of Warcraft was released to the public.

    The only real thing you can do to "fix" it is buy an Intel processor that's at least newer than the Intel i7 920 (can be an i3, 5, or 7 but needs to be newer than Circa 2008)


    The last thing I'll mention is this: While your Single Thread performance on the FX-8300 Series is higher than mine, my 1100T gets significantly better performance than you are reporting, so you either need to up your power supply, fix your timings, unpark your cores, or get a better motherboard/RAM.
