I wouldn't call this incident "favoritism" but nevertheless Spacecats shouldn't have done that. It's just unprofessional.
A community manager should be neutral and fair. No matter how small the rewards, or how small the event is, any kind of event should have been available to everyone on the server. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident and he won't go around doing little events here and there for few group of people.

Btw guys, all this back and forth bickering is so meaningless.
Bottom line is, Spacecats goofed but it wasn't anything that "serious" as some of u make it out to be.
However I'm glad that this was brought into light, so Spacecats won't make these mistakes again...

I had a longer post, but I'll just go with something simple.

Firstly, please take context of any word into consideration. The word you chose is a financial/political term, out of all the words in that section I chose discrimination for a reason, and then continued on with the definition of preference for reason too... The bottom line is, he didn't play favorites with anyone, he probably didn't even know most of them in the first place. I'm honestly unsure what's the point in arguing over this, words like this have strict definitions that you don't just bend to fit your narrative, I mean you can, but don't expect everyone to blindly follow. Would also prefer if the whole definition discussion kind of... dropped.

Secondly, my issue had nothing to do with the tone, but the goal and context of the post. There was no criticism, it was just a bunch of accusations to bother Spacecats. Any accusation can easily harm the reputation of a person (defamation).

There's a big difference between the following two emotional statements:
"Spacecats is a [filtered] idiot for spawning BAMs without telling us!"
    and
"Spacecats is a corrupt CM who is just abusing his powers to benefit the people he plays favorites with"

While both are stupid ways to respond, at least the first one isn't full of false accusations based on jealousy (even though there was nearly no rewards anyways.......).

He's essentially abusing his powers which makes it seems like he's not taking the job seriously. Do we have to be a suck-up to a GM to get in game benefits? Not to mention the patch notes were suppose to be up but he was just hanging around in velika with this special group.

Wasn't his job to make Tera community better? not making this "Spacecats club". I'm pretty sure its not part of his job description to spawn BAMs that only people he selected can get. In fact what he's doing is only making sub-community of Tera that only selected people get to join.

We would've never found out about this if he didn't make a mistake and made the in game notification. The majority of the people who are not in that group can only frown upon for what Spacecats has done.

It's really upsetting and sad to see Tera community manager doing this kind of action.
Re-quoted the post, with bolded text, for reference. It's probably best to fully read what someone said before jumping in and defending them. Criticism is fine, because as I said, he could have just pointed out what Spacecats did was unprofessional, could have gotten the point across without lying in more ways than one. Situations like this is why it's pretty common for publishers and developers to avoid their forums and stick to social media if they communicate beyond announcements. Publishers/Developers are humans as I said, over the last couple years we've had people step down, quit the industry all together, and even end their life over how the community treats them. If you want things to improve, you don't do so by trying to spread a false rumor. You're more likely to get your way through honesty anyways.

Unfortunately my 'simpler' post is still kind of long...

This was discussed in the previous similar thread. There are three types of community events:

    1) large-scale planned events (e.g. Mongos, this coming weekend's event, etc.)
    2) small-scale scheduled events (e.g. weekly streams)
    3) small-scale impromptu ("surprise") events

The last category happen without notice on whatever server at whatever time it so happens to be, and there's no advance warning because it's a surprise event. If you're not there at the time or playing on that server, you'll miss it. They're surprise events because it depends on the GM schedule when they have some time, unlike scheduled events. This is exactly the sort of GM interaction that players in the past kept clamouring for and said was missing compared to the early days (when GMs used to hang out with people and do special impromptu events -- including random BAM spawnings for people hanging out in Velika Outskirts). Now Spacecats brought it back, and people are complaining that it's unfair, even without knowing whether the rewards were worth talking about or not.

If you're going to act on that sort of criticism, the only answer is that the GMs are forbidden from doing any sort of surprise/impromptu events. I don't accept that this sort of rigidity is a price worth paying for "fairness." Even scheduled events aren't "fair" because you might not be on that server, available at that time/day, or sufficiently geared/leveled to participate. All this sort of argument does is severely limit the sorts of events the GMs can offer to players, and will reduce the amount of events overall (because they may have time to do something, but now can't since it wasn't sufficiently scheduled to be "fair").

I think allowing GMs to do fun things in the game as their time/schedule allows should be encouraged and applauded, and while efforts should be made to ensure any given event isn't so grossly-unfairly-rewarding, or that any given server isn't disproportionately favored, I believe that it's valuable to have these sorts of surprise events to make a more fun and vibrant game community, whether people find it "unfair" or not.

I would actually say Spacecats did an okay job even though I wasn't on during that event.

Random events keeps the community together.

He just needs to make it slightly more frequent, at funny times, with no bias towards servers (so everyone can benefit at some point in time).

As for the QQers, seriously. There is no bias IMO. Of course he did a very bad choice of words that could suggest he is just doing for a specific few. If anything I want a CM that actually does something with the community instead of one that just sits back and let players do their regular mundane job.

The BAM event? It was similar to the one in old Highwatch server. Rewards aren't that large the last time, and no one really QQed about it. Heck even that event wasn't really planned from what I remembered. I don't see why there should be an outroar for a similar event this time.

Hmm, so this would sort of fall under #3, but why it made people upset was that, usually events are announced in game as it's occurring. Like in global chat or as a system message of some sort. This time around it wasn't, only those few people who were near Spaceacts got to kill them. Rest of the server wasn't even aware of it happening.

Ty that's exactly what I wanted to say, I know there are surprise events that GMs do, and I'm not salty about the fact that I missed it. If you miss it then you miss it. But I've heard from multiple people that didn't couldn't get that BAM even tho they were actively playing at that time.

The fact that he accidentally spawned it and despawned them because it wasn't meant for them seems very unfair. Even the way he worded it sounded like that only these "special group" in Velika gets it.

If there were fair chance of everyone getting to that BAM (i.e. announcement) even if it was for 10 mins it wouldn't have got me this upset.

If you invite the whole server, it means you have to do a whole other scale of event. There are surprise events you can do for 50 people, but if 200 people drop by all of a sudden (after an announcement), it'll turn into a lag fest and everyone will get mad (because they'll say you "wasted their time" with a "bad event"). And really, if you announce it, it's no less "unfair" to people who happened to not be online at that particular moment, or who weren't paying attention at that time.

That's why I'm saying that even announcing a surprise event doesn't really solve anything. It was an event for people who happened to be at the right place at the right time; it's just more localized than they sometimes are. But it's still in the same category of "surprise events." It's not like he called out to specific people to invite them or anything; he showed up somewhere, and people who were there at the time got to fight some BAMs.

(So I guess, if we really want, we can split category three into two: impromptu server-wide events (server announcement), and impromptu localized events (if you happen to be there at the right time).)

"Being at the right place at the right time"
Does this sound fair? RNG again??? Isn't RNG enough with the Loot Boxes, +15, and now Dragons? Events have to be RNG too?
No matter how small or insignificant event/rewards are, there should be a server announcement. He could have just said something like "Spawned a couple of BAMs in velika for fun, not a serious event"
Honestly, shouldn't have spawned the BAMs in the first place if it wasn't a server-wide event... It's just unprofessional and unfair to other players who are actually playing the game at the time. Sure, those 50 people might have had fun, but what about the rest of the server? Aren't impromptu events suppose to be a reward to players who are actually playing the game at the time? When majority of the players don't even know about it, what is the point? Just to make a few group of lucky players feel special? This sounds stupid to me...
