Long time MMO player looking for a new home, give me pros , cons please.

Good Morning,

I have played mmos since ultima online, though I really count EQ 1 as the first mmo, not really uo.. but anyways, recently I spent the last 3.5 years or so in Neverwinter online, but they recently made a slew of changes to the game, basically making the grind about 20-30X more then it was before, and more or less locking you out of ALL alt play.

Before that I spent about 4 years in lotro and 4 years in eq 1 and 2 in eq 2.. Ive played or tried almost every mmo on the market in the last few years.. though none with commitments of the top 3-4 I played with. (gw, ddo, wow, skyforge, gw2,rift, eve and stuff, played at some point, but never got into them)

I am looking for a game that has

A. engaging combat system, similar to neverwinter.
B. Ability to play alts at a high level (not expecting bis on everything.. but competitive enough to play 3-4 different alts)
C. I will spend (some) money, but I will not pay thousands of dollars to play a game, so if that is the case, I would be out. If its 1-200 a year.. I would be ok with that.
D. The main progression pathing is via playing dungeons/raids/skirms

I dont usually look at games this old, because I have a rule about joining games not in its first year, but all the games that came out recently , ARE not what im looking for at all.

I enjoyed my time in neverwinter, but its really , really gotten bad of late. Basically its newest mod, is all about fishing (I do not lie ) you make all of your in game money via fishing. No one is running dungeons or skirms or instances.. because why bother, you can sit on a boat and make triple or quadruple that.. fishing.

I need a new home and I want to ask the players who play it the most what they think..

  • Just a friendly tip. Take everything that will get posted here with a grain of salt. You will get extreme responses from both positive posters and negative posters. I would recommend to just try out and level out a character. If you like what you see stick with it, if not, then cut your losses and hopefully you find something else. You don't have to worry about fishing or anything like that in this game. You either you go run dungeons to gear up or to have fun, or you can just stand around and AFK in the big cities, all up to you.
  • if you're looking for combat similar to NW, you've come to the right place. tera's combat is not only the best(i'm stating my opinion, but i'm sure alot will agree) but really fun at the same time. if you're not looking for a grind for leveling alts, tera is your mmorpg. you can level from 1 to 60(depending if you have xp boosts) in a day, level 60 to 65 in a few hours. i have 6 alts at level 65, which didn't take long at all to max level. i've been playing for a good 2-3 years now.

i try to go back to old mmorpgs, tera's ruined them for me personally. you don't have to spend a single cent in the cash shop, people may scream p2w, but the game is pay to look pretty. there is a few gender locked classes, but what mmorpg doesn't have that. gold is somewhat easy to make still, it's been harder as of late because of them dirty gold sellers trying to ruin the game. there's lots of events, like christmas, halloween, etc. i'm going to 100% say you'll love this game, if you give it a chance.

the elite sub helps alot for leveling, but isn't required(although i couldn't see myself playing this game without it). just take the time to educate yourself about the game, like dungeons, raids, pvp. i don't pvp myself, so i can't say anything about that.

all in all, tera is wonderful, beautiful, and really fun. but try it for yourself, get to level 65 before you make a decision. like i said before, you'll love it. hope this helps!
  • A. Combat is imo the most "action combat" of all games claiming they have " "action combat" ". i havent played neverwinter, but i can promise you wont be disapointed
    B. every class is dedicated, so you are pretty much either a healer, tank or dps (except for 2 hybrids who excel at neither of them, or at least i dont), also current reward systems benefit most if you play several toons instead of just 1. you definitly don't need Bis for any of this. Skill > gear is the rule generally. However if you meant PVP when you say "competitive", than i have to say PVP is nearly non-existant.
    C. totally F2P, even if you want to have elite, you can have someone else pay it and you buy it from them with ingame money. Some items may be expensive af though
    D. Yes, most players would just spam whatever dungeon they can do at their current level untill lvl 60 and then pick up the story line (which is quickest exp) until lv 65.

Playing Tera, its non-target action is better than any other games, even the new ones. Tera lacks in some stuff but forums is over-exaggerating the problems. It has way less problems that many other games I played, EME is a huge advantage we have. We are like so close together, the relationship EME staff has with community is something I never saw anywhere else.

I am on CH, 12 Characters, all at max, They all had dread set, now I am getting them Slaughter, fully enchanted, since it is fair and easy, then I focus on my main and loving classes to go for Guile and w/e I get higher than casual gear. So I am busy, playing 1 to 3 hours daily, and the past couple of months was fun for me.

So I say try it, get to 65 soon, leveling is kinda boring but still I like it, Don't read too much forum threads you might get a lotta salt and high blood pressure can lead to Heart Attack, game can improve hella but it is not in a bad shape at all.
  • A. Tera has, in my opinion, the best combat of any MMOs I've played. It's really engaging.

    B. You get a minimum of 2 character slots per server, up to 16 (I think) if you want to buy more.

    C. I'd say Elite (sub) is worth it, but really, you never have to spend a dime. Real money just gets you shortcuts or cosmetics.

    D. Even knowing nothing about the game, just follow the story quests if you want, or just level to 20+ then just queue for dungeons.
  • I take it all with the grain of salt.

No worries on my side, but players could at least tell me the basics..

I just dont want to sit around for 50-60 hours of game time fishing..

there is crafting in tera, but i wouldn't worry about that until they completely update it. you can also gather, which is quite lucrative at times. there's plenty to do if you don't want to gather. also, there's plenty of ways to make money besides gathering, which you can figure out for yourself(sorry, can't help on that, everybody has their own secrets to money making).

basically, you level to 65.... you run dungeons or farm BAMS to get geared, and if you really get into, you can gather mats for high end pvp gear and craft them.

anything else i missed will probably be filled in by other players.
  • you wont regret it
there are lot of cons on Tera, but this isnt the time for discuss that.

tbh, i'm just playing tera while waiting for Revelation Online.
  • I signed up for beta on that game.. but it looks like a anime time game honestly with its graphics.

I didnt get the free beta it appears and not paying 50 bucks to try out a game,, I would pay it if its fun and it had value.
  • ya.. tab target sorta sux after you got away from it.

Which is why I have a hard time dumping neverwinter.. as combat in so many other mmos feels like playing games from 15 years ago now.

So Pros and Cons; I'll start this play saying I've spent fours years in this game since launch. Putting it down for a while, only to come back every time.

    Pros;

    - Best action combat MMO out there. What everyone is saying is true, Tera truly does ruin you for other MMOs once you experience it.

    - This ones more for your annoyance of fishing. All max level content is dungeon or PvP battleground based. There isn't really any out world content in the way of fishing. You can gather and craft but dungeons will net you more worth in most instances.

    - All content in game is obtainable for free. All the classes, races, gear, and dungeons/battlegrounds require zero bucks down to play at max level.

    - New content just hit so you can hit the game running as the gear sets have essentially reset. While the BiS gear from last patch is more than enough for current content, you are now in a time to get caught up as more players return.

    - Old gear isn't really useless until two big patches out. The BiS gear from last patch, Imperator(VM7), is second best in game and doesn't just make all that effort you put into getting it useless.

I'm sure there's more, but it's free, just pick it up yo.

    Cons

    - F2P model does hamper new players in choices of amount of alts. You get 2 slots, so it's a good start and can buy more through cash shop or in games Trade Broker from another player that did.
Leading from this, if you fall in love with the game and want all the slots you can get, buying a standard edition will still net you 8 character slots at a super low price on amazon.

    - There have been some recent missteps with EME (NA publisher) and Blue Hole Studio (BHS, Korean developer).
Without getting too much into detail, there's been a widening gap between us and the game makers in regards to certain content we're getting into our build. Nothing big enough to mention here as "A get out while you can" notice, but it is a con so there you go.

    - Grind for BiS gear can be steep for those uneducated or without time to do so. The grind for VM8 (Visionmaker aka the commuinities term for BiS gear since launch) can be somewhat vast to those without people to run with. Two people in my group however, have their VM8 weapons already +15 and the third is half way there. Content is only a week old, so this is to show it isn't like 5 months to get one piece.

    - No real open world content. Where as NW has fishing, Tera is lacking in any form of that content. There is crafting and gathering, but neither are extensive or worth much investment in.

As with cons, there's more but the Cons don't outweigh the Pros quite yet.

I would say, give it a try. I'm in the Tempest Reach server and my main is Platina. Any other questions you can feel free to whisper me in forums or game.

Hopefully well see you in game soon.

Fishing is actually kinda what kills game economies most of the time because of how hard it is to balance an activity that is based off not looking at the screen.

Tera doesn't have this sort of mechanic, and yes it is one of the reasons why I still stayed.

I will try to be as objective as I can so you can make your judgement.

    Pros:

Levelling is way simpler than it is 2 years ago. Mostly because of the fact that nobody can be bothered to immerse themselves in regular levelling cuz they wanna learn all their skills asap.

Action combat giving the excitement most players stay on for. Reaction is the name of the game and because it is not tab-target you have to actually know how to reposition and stuffs like that. I would call the fact that none of the players can be lazy and sloppy in their gameplay showing that the game is immersive enough.

The game honestly is beautiful if you play it through slowly the first time instead of rushing through end-game. If you aren't that desperate for the endgame, really go through all of these story quests one by one because that is what makes Tera fun for the new players. Coupled with lots of achievements to get.

Endgame is sorted by difficulty as well as gear progression, so despite all the lore, the real game starts at the end

You can actually die in dungeons with the BiS gear in mid-tier gear. This reemphasizes point 2 that gear doesn't solocarry you through games.

Cute/Sexy costumes for all classes, even Baraka has something badass, what can I say?

    Cons:

Game is not as optimized for the average computer. If you have a specialised computer built for gaming, it might still not run at the fullest capacity you can get.

PvP is sadly watered down by the developers. I call it a shame really because when action combat comes in, PvP will feel more immersive and it was a huge reason why some players play this game (including me).

A part of the community can get very selfish, but that can happen to any community ANYWAY sooooo...

You can't truly infinite grind with only one character. This is both a pro and a con so I leave it to you.

Because lots of things are easier while levelling, the skill floor jump required for dungeons post 65 can get very daunting. If you can get past this fast enough most players will not look at you. But as I say, the community can get very selfish, so if you cause them wipes or not pulling your weight, out you go from the party :P.

If you have high ping (ie living in Asia/Australia), you might have to be able to predict lots of stuff due to the game not being ping friendly. Not something that is impossible to do, but it gets way harder at the higher level.

  • I wouldn't join Tera. Just because they're doing nothing in regards about the lag/dc issues as well as killing off the NEW content that came out by having a limited entrance, not even being able to reset entrance for any of them.
  • edited November 2016
Tera is in a bad state. therefore unless you enjoy its combat, lonely leveling and a bit of p2w on a side its not really worth getting into at this point.
And when people actually say this game has lag/dc its not a side issue, its a BIG DEAL! Because i get lag at some point everyday and it makes me want to just turn off the game and do something else. While desync is a big issue in PvP as it breaks the immersion and takes no skill to win then. Battlegrounds need to be also fixed as nobody does them now due to nailing the coffin on equalized gear and que times are too long.
