About lvling and drops...?

I'm quite new to the game, I played a little before but I might want to get more into this game.
One reason I quit is because you don't get exp or drops when you fight an enemy but another player struck the first blow and it won't count for quests either.

I was fighting a tough mob for my level and joined a second or two after someone else had initiated the fight and a while later when the enemy was dead, I got nothing at all.

That made me think other players will be frequently like pointless rivals and get in my way even if I just do pve. Sounds very much opposed to the concept of playing with other people.

I assume you get rewards if partied up with others?
But how much of those rewards, does partying up mean you get a fraction of a rewards so small that soloing would actually be better? Or can you just party up easily and don't have to worry about this?

And is all loot in the game personalized? No sharing? No need to worry that a raid/dungeon boss drops only 1 item and other people grab it?
Speaking of which, is there a way to turn off the super confusing drops of other people that look exactly like my own drops, but which I can't pick up? I can't do anything with them, why is the game even showing me them, to raise object count and tax my graphics card more?

Finally, I only did a few of the beginning story quests before, when can you start doing multiplayer pve content like raids, dungeons, etc.?

  • Hey, welcome back! As you stated, yes, the best thing to do when you bump into other other players in the open world is party up with them, so you can both get xp for the kills, grind faster, etc. When you are in a party everyone gets the xp (it's not divided between the members, everyone gets the same xp he would get if he was soloing) and loot is divided; in dungeons having a full party is also advantegeous because the more members you have, the more xp you receive, and the more loot is dropped (IIRC with a full party of 5 people you receive 3x the xp in dungeons and 5x loot).

In dungeons/parties you can only receive loot if that item is suitable for your class, if there is more than 1 player that is suitable for that item it is given randomly to one of the players that can use it, no matter who's the one looting it.
For example, you are in a party with priest (wears cloth armor), 2 warriors (leather armor), 1 lancer (metal armor), 1 gunner (metal armor), and you are the gunner, you kill the lava rabbit boss and it drops a metal armor and cloth gloves; then one of the warriors loots both the items, automatically the priest will receive cloth gloves because he's the only one who wears cloth, then, since there are 2 players who are suitable for the metal armor, you and the lancer, the game generates automatically one random number for you, and one for the lancer, and who gets the highest number gets the item, say you get 56 and the lancer gets 67, then the armor is automatically given to the lancer.
I hope this makes everything clear.

Nope, you can't, but they're grayed out, while yours are colored/white.

You can do your first dungeon at level 20, and after that there is roughly one new dungeon every 5 levels. To do a dungeon just click the instance matching icon, it looks like a house, select the dungeon and in a few minutes the system will find a party!

EDIT: If you don't like the story quest in Tera don't worry, you can easily level by doing dungeons and grinding BAMS, just use the instance matching function to find a party for dungeons, and while you wait for a dungeon group do the vanguard quests: these quests are repeatable grinding quests, there are normal mobs grinding quest and BAMS (world bosses) grinding quests, to do them open H menu and select the teleport button of the quest that you are interested in; remember to click "complete" when you're done. Here's a fast leveling guide.

If you look at your UI, there's a Channel listed in the upper right-hand corner, above your compass (it's labeled 6 in this picture). You can change from your default channel to a different channel, which may have fewer players in it. If you're having trouble getting a unique quest mob, that's an easy way to get one all to yourself.

If you're in a party with others, you will definitely get the quest updates for anything killed by either of you.

As for loot, that depends on the party leader's loot settings.

I haven't noticed an issue. Generally, when I'm in a party (primarily for dungeons/instances), things are dying fast enough and enough loot is dropping that loot accumulates faster.

Quest rewards are, and as you level up, that will frequently be the best loot you have.

Most quest rewards are already soulbound to you. Drops will usually soulbind when you equip them. There are some items that can be used, then used by another player, but usually not the best gear.

You can use the Instance Finder to get a party for an instance rather easily. The amount of time you'll have to wait may vary. Wait times are shortest for tanks and healers.

Depends on the loot settings. If it's Free-for-all, then it belongs to the first person who grabs it. Usually it's some version of Round Robin or Roll for It.

If you wait a few minutes, you can pick them up. If you wait a little longer, they disappear. Basically, they get a (long) first crack at getting their own loot. If they decide to leave it behind, you can eventually pick it up.

Most people start doing dungeons around level 20, beginning with Bastion of Lok.
