well, it is so hard to implement a "path" selector from the launcher? example: like path 1 ( routed thru zayo) pointing to 10.0.0.1 (example ip) , and path 2 (routed thru savvis ) poiting to 10.0.0.2 (example ip) , both gateways redirecting to the game servers in the same facility? so people can choose which routing path fits them better?, I mean its another hop in the traceroute but the latency introduced by that would be under 5ms if both gateways are "next" to the gameservers in the same facility
Yes; it is simply NOT possible, since the routing pathfinding is done starting from the the user's router, and depends the user's ISP AND connection point to start with.
The way it is done is part of the underlying IP protocol, and companies have no control over how users will be routed to them, other than which will be the final hop to their servers.

Doing what you suggest would require an entirely different type of software which does not exist to my knowledge (and may not be possible).
That software would have to REPLACE the routing process, accept or ban specific hops, the quality of which vary could over time; I see several cans of worms opening just trying to create and implement such routing black-listing; including the simple fact that white-listed nodes would soon become overloaded themselves as a direct consequence.

I was not talking about "modifying" the route, or banning hops, I was simply saying that, if they can swap internet providers, have one gateway over one provider, and another gateway on the other, and point the "target" server at one of those, and yeah, pretty much each gateway just redirects to the actual game server in the same building, no need to implement some kind of "smart routing", like the one you describe, heck, they can even make it automatic by pinging each "gateway", like lower ping = better less congestion over your side = choose that gateway so no user interaction or additional config is needed.

In general you're right and I was going to say the same thing. If you get really creative, there could be a way to dual-NIC absolutely everything and have all the servers keep things straight (which would at least allow the choice of both backbone providers), but it'd be such a massive PITA to architect on top of existing software that it's really not feasible. The other thing I thought about is having some servers on one backbone and some on another, but that wouldn't help any instanced content, which is where the problem is most apparent in the first place. So there isn't really a good solution. The nature of MMOs is that it needs to keep everyone together on the same servers to do content, so you can't do the sorts of workarounds companies like Netflix did to bypass congested nodes.

I don't know what you guys did, but holy.... The ping is out of this world now. I mean it's been bad for me for awhile now along with everyone else but it was at least at a point it could be managed. A few hours of stable[ish] ping then just dealing with unplayable for another couple hours, annoying but alright. But since yesterday it has went absolutely bonkers.
My normal ping is between 60-79, high 100's if the issue hits at it's certain hours. Since yesterday however it is a non stop bounce, 69 to 190 to 200's then skyrockets to 600-800 with a 5k spike in between them. And it does this on repeat and so fast that now i can't even open things like guild/bank/merch/broker without freezing for 20 seconds. Moving is nearly impossible. Dungeons/just daily grind ? Ha, nope.
This is getting a little ridiculous now.... I at least want my 100's back, i could at least run dungeons with that even if it was annoying x.x
  • May Fang & Feather bring good things, finally.

If not, we'd better be prepared for another month of lags, disconnects, server crashes and bugs just as it was after the launch of the CU and Spellbound updates !!!

Well, I think so much optimism was precipitated...

    Wellcome back issues!!!
  • Game is literally unplayable atm. I live 50 miles from where the servers are hosted and i'm getting 2k ms ping spikes and 20-30% packet loss since the harrowhold patch. Zayo lag a month ago affected me as well but only 2-3 times and only for a short period of an hour or so a day. This new lag starts around 4pm pst and runs all the way until about 3 in the morning.

I've been through a lot with this game over the past couple years but bad servers/connection issues of this kind really would be the final straw for me. i can deal with all the balance issues, broken economy, ect. but this makes the game unplayable. i literally cannot even login to the game for more than 3 mins without getting dced right now.
  • Here's a thought. Stop making mass gathering combat events or dungeons. If it works on Korean infrastructure great for them. The game however is bound by a global market so unless you got money to make one off content for countries just stop doing it. Simple.
  • Game is unplayable. Ping shot up to 20k. [filtered]. What the [filtered].
  • Plz fix servers tera
  • So, er, is something happening on AV? I got D/C'd and every time I try to go back, I get D/C'd again.

Ping spikes... in Harrowhold for the whole raid.
    Do something already.

We dont have talents or anything, we need at least good connection to learn this [filtered], we dont have room for extra pings.
  • This really has just run away from EME completely. From the incompetence and indecision with their server side / launcher issues to class changes that just plain don't make sense.

  • so we can turn dreamstorm back on because it clearly wasn't the issue right?
